Two diametrically opposite approaches in the literal sense of the word - two authors “approached” from different sides to an ancient stone from the Pskov region “to read the inscription.

Unique stones of the Pskov region

On September 22, 2012, a letter from Artyom Borisovich Karakaev was published on the website of the Academy of Trinitarianism, asking him to say what and in what language is written on the stone, a photograph of which is shown in Fig. 1. This stone, according to Artem Borisovich, was found in a forest near the village of Uritskoye, which is located 30-35 km from the mountains. Velikie Luki. Not far from the place of discovery, the river Lovat flows, along which, as the chronicles say, the route from the Varyags to the Greeks passed.

Since the stone with the inscription was found in the Pskov region, one could assume that the text was written in dialectal Russian, but using signs of the archaic Greek alphabet. Even F. Wolansky, a Polish archaeologist, philologist and epigraphist in the 19th century, wrote “… many Slavs, namely in Russia, Serbia and Moldova, use these letters to this day, and we have every right to ask: Did the Slavs borrow from the Greeks or the latter Do the Slavs have these letters? (2). And our epigraphic experience shows that the archaic Greeks spoke dialectal Russian, i.e. were also Proto-Slavs (3, p. 212 - 225), and, therefore, the archaic Greek alphabet can with good reason be called the Russian pre-Cyrillic alphabet.

Conclusions:

1. The inscription on the stone is an epitaph.

2. The language of the inscription is dialectal Russian.

3. The alphabet is mixed, including the characters of the Cyrillic alphabet, archaic Greek and Latin.

A different approach to deciphering the inscription on the stone from the Pskov region

I decided to write this note right after the article by G. G. was published on the website of the Academy of Trinitarianism. Kotova on deciphering an inscription on a stone from the Pskov region. It stated that the language of the inscription is dialectal Russian, and the alphabet is mixed, including the signs of the Cyrillic, archaic Greek and Latin alphabet.

However, if the stone is turned over (Fig. 1), then everyone who knows Hebrew (Fig. 2 and 3), the history of its origin (Fig. 4) and is familiar with Judaism (not Jewry) will tell you that in the photo there is a gravestone - above פיינ, a woman is buried under it, I cannot make out the name (this is the 3rd line from the top), apparently, the daughter of Yitzchak (4th line). Buried in the year (שנת תרפ) fifth line from the top, which according to the modern calendar corresponds to 1920.

Is it surprising that there is not a single Jewish scientist among the readers of such an interesting and advanced scientific site? It is a Jew, not a Jew, who thinks that an unusual surname, a big nose and burr are enough for him to classify himself as a “people of the book” …

PS On the topic of the usual point of view, it is useful to recall the old story of how a marketer failed an advertising campaign in the Middle East.
