In the early seventies of the last century, an adventure movie with the intriguing title "Sannikov Land" was released in the USSR.
The film tells about an Arctic expedition that went in search of the legendary warm and blooming land in the middle of the Arctic Ocean, which, back in 1811, allegedly saw with his own eyes the Siberian hunter and pioneer Yakov Sannikov, who hunted fur animals on the New Siberian Islands.
The ending of the film, which gained more than 40,000,000 views in the first year of distribution, can be called symbolic and even hinting: the travelers, by their gross interference in the life of innocent aborigines, violated the unstable balance of Nature and as a result of a tectonic shift, even a fault, the blossoming Sannikov Land perished under earthquakes. volcanic eruptions and disappeared into the chilling abyss of the Arctic Ocean.
The film, as it were, completes more than a century of the search for the mysterious "Promised Land" in the North Pole region and says: "Everything is over, there is no land and there is nothing more to look for, everything has disappeared forever."

From the moment of the first mention of Sannikov Land in the early 19th century and almost until the end of the same century, no one was interested in this matter, at least the information did not go out into the public sphere.

In 1889, a scroll of an 11th century monk was allegedly discovered in the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, where it was described about a sacred island located somewhere far to the north called "The Mysterious Lord". The scroll read: "Strong and great is that people, they built fields and palaces under the oceans and under the earth itself."
Also, the text of the scroll allegedly narrated the existence of a certain island in the Arctic seas, which is a kind of entrance to the underworld, whose inhabitants possessed a highly developed civilization. Something like North Atlantis, possessing enormous power, so longed for by the inhabitants of the upper, terrestrial world. If this is so, then it is quite clear that secret Masonic lodges could not ignore such an attractive opportunity to get their hands on the invincible forces of a mysterious super civilization.
According to reliable sources, the said scroll was secretly delivered to a member of the State Council, Prince A. P. Oldenburgsky. The latter made efforts to organize the expedition of Baron von Toll, in whose footsteps the heroes of the film of the same name went in search of Sannikov's land.

As for the islands "with mesas covered with lush greenery", quite materialistic explanations have been found for this. These are the so-called alluvial ice islands, that is, huge fragments of icebergs that have been covered with earth for centuries and vegetation has even begun to grow on them.
Over time, the sea water eroded the foundations of the ice islands and the forested lands, which the travelers saw and thought it was Sannikov Land, simply crumbled and dissolved in the ocean.
