Scientists at Harvard claim that they have discovered the physical source of human consciousness. This information became known thanks to the publication of an article by specialists in one of the scientific foreign publications.
Scientists came to the conclusion that the physical source of human consciousness exists through long research. In the course of the experiment, experts discovered 3 brain regions that play a rather important role in this process.
According to scientists, human consciousness includes two important components - arousal and awareness. Previously, it was reported that the excitation, most likely, is regulated in the trunk. But the latter, together with two other areas, may well be a source of consciousness. To accurately check the veracity of this information, scientists took information about 36 patients with an affected brain stem, 12 of whom were in a coma, and 24 were conscious.
The main goal for doctors was to find out why some people can remain conscious, while others fall into a coma, although they may have the same injuries. The big surprise was that in 10 out of 12 patients in a coma, the same parts of the brain were damaged.
At the end of the experiment, it was possible to find out how much the affected areas are connected to the rest of the brain. The experts said they intend to use the findings in the future in order to investigate new treatments for patients falling into a coma after receiving life-threatening injuries.
