Many lakes on our planet bear the name Lost ("lost", "lost"), but only a body of water in Oregon (USA) fully corresponds to this name. In spring, a small lake flows out through a hole in the ground, and with the arrival of cold weather it returns to its place.
Lost Lake is located in the Mount Hood National Forest, in the Cascade Mountains near Jefferson Volcano. The relief of this area was formed hundreds of years ago as a result of volcanic activity.
Once there were rivers of lava flowing here. Due to contact with cold air, its upper layers cooled and hardened, but under the petrified crust, the lava flow continued to move - like a river under ice. Years passed, the lava subsided, leaving narrow channels underground - they are called lava tubes.
At the end of autumn, streams of water begin to fill a small valley. Sediments first accumulate in a lava tube. When their number exceeds its capacity, water accumulates on the surface; its level sometimes reaches three meters. But with the arrival of spring and summer, the flow of liquid stops, and then the water is drawn into a lava tube located at the bottom of the lake. In the driest years, the lake disappears completely, and a small meadow appears in its place.
