Employees of the Russian Arctic National Park removed more than 600 artifacts from a secret German meteorological station operating on the Franz Josef Land archipelago during World War II. Irina Skalina, Deputy Director for Environmental Education and Tourism of the National Park, told TASS about this.
“The collection is currently being systematized. In total, the park's museum fund contains more than 600 artifacts collected at the station,”she explained.
Among other things, the researchers found a large amount of military equipment, fuel containers, and canned food. Among the finds are mines, fragments of M-24 hand grenades, a large number of ammunition boxes, cartridge cases for the Mauser 98 rifle, boxes for cartridge belts from the MG-34 machine gun.
The discovery of a secret Nazi base called "Treasure Hunter" in the Arctic was reported by Russian researchers in August. The facility is located on the island of Alexandra Land, part of the Franz Josef Land archipelago. Due to climatic conditions, all discovered objects are well preserved. The finds will be kept in the museum fund of the Russian Arctic National Park.
