According to the British paleontologist, the evolutionary processes that have modified the population of our planet Earth are applicable to the entire universe. This means that the choice of appearance for living organisms is very limited.
A scientist from the University of Cambridge, Professor Simon Morris, believes that humanoid aliens certainly appeared in the process of evolution on some planets discovered by astronomers and resembling Earth. The Independent writes about this. In his new book "Runes of Evolution", the scientist discusses convergent evolution, when different living organisms, falling into certain conditions, acquire the same appearance. For example, dolphins are like mammals and sharks are like fish.
“The bottom line is to try to bring the reader, naturally, as easily and unobtrusively as possible, to the realization of this fact: a number of the most important, from our point of view, things, such as a complex way of thinking, the volume of the brain, the presence of intelligence, are also convergent. Therefore, in principle, on other planets like the Earth, the world order may be similar to ours,”emphasizes Morris.
In his opinion, convergent, or parallel evolution, could occur not only on our planet, but also in space. Thus, the population of the Earth and the population of any other planet developed independently of each other, but according to identical scenarios. The Earth and its environment, as well as other similar worlds, created almost identical problems and offered similar solutions. As a result, Morris is sure that humanity should have a lot in common with its intelligent neighbors in the universe.
“Of course, this does not mean that every celestial body that resembles the Earth is inhabited by humanoids. However, if you set yourself the goal of growing a beautiful and complex plant, in the end, you will definitely get a flower. If you intend to create a fly, then you will have only a few ways to do it,”he explained.
“The problem is very acute: we, it seems, should not be alone, but everything indicates only that this is so. Perhaps aliens are hiding, as Arthur Clarke suggested, or, as Stephen Baxter sarcastically suggested, we live in a virtual world. This I do not know for sure. But I dare to assume that we have just started to study this reality from scratch,”concluded Morris, adding that his new book aims to awaken interest and healthy curiosity in the minds of his readers.
