The idea that human consciousness lives after death has been put forward by a number of respected scientists.
There are many things we don't know for sure, such as what consciousness is, but physicist Sir Roger Penrose believes that it is just a packet of information stored at the quantum - or subatomic - level.
He sensationally claims to have found evidence that this information, which is stored in microtubules inside a person's cells, leaves the body after the person dies.
Researchers claim that people have souls that leave the body after death, and can live without it forever.
Sir Roger argues that when a person dies temporarily, this quantum information is released into the universe, only to return to the cells of the body if the host comes back to life.
He argues that this explains why people can have near-death experiences, and believes that this quantum information boils down to the soul leaving the body.
An expert in physics says: "If the patient dies, it is possible that this quantum information could exist outside the body, perhaps even indefinitely, like a soul."

And Sir Roger is not alone in his conclusions, believing so, and his theory is supported by researchers from the famous Max Planck Institute for Physics in Munich.
The experts who claim this say that our physical universe is just a perception, and that once our body dies, there is endless life beyond it.
Dr. Hans-Peter Dürr, former head of the institute, said: "What we think is 'here and now', this world, is really just the level of material that is acceptable."
"The afterlife is an endless reality that is much more than what we know."

Earlier this year, another remarkable statement about the afterlife was made by a terminally ill violinist who survived 17 clinical deaths. He claims to be on the “other side”.
Paul Robertson died of heart disease on July 27, but believed he had seen death many times before he passed away.
During one of his near-death experiences, he claimed that he was blocked from entering heaven by a group of laughing angels who smelled of cologne.
Another vision showed him bathing in the aura of an "Asian goddess", while he claims further supernatural encounter led him to believe he was a strong dog sledding across the Arctic.
