Such a beautiful and romantic name, like a moth-man, does not seem intimidating, especially since we would not have thought that this was the name of the creature that instilled fear in the inhabitants of the town of Point Pleasant in West Virginia in the 60s. This urban legend tells of a creature that was about the size of a man but resembled a bird. And this creature was far from a harmless moth. So let's find out the details.

On November 12, 1966, five grave diggers working in the cemetery noticed a "brown man" who flew in the air over their heads. After 3 days, one couple saw in the air a white, human-like creature with red eyes.

And a man with 3-meter wings chased their car for a long time. The next day, a local newspaper published an article about the incident, spreading panic among the people.

And people really began to see this creature. After some time, two firefighters said they saw a huge bird with red eyes. One of the residents of Point Pleasant stated that one evening strange noise appeared on his TV screen, then he heard a strange sound from the street. Leaving the house, he saw someone watching him, but he noticed only two eyes, burning red.

They tried to give a logical explanation for the appearance of a strange creature. The Mason County Sheriff said that the townspeople most likely saw an oversized heron, and in the dark they could mistake it for some unusual creature.

A biologist from the state university also assured that it was possible that the cedar crane fought off the migrating flock. However, people were already tuned in to a mystical background and did not believe that everything was so simple. But one day it all ended by itself. On December 15, 1967, the Silver Bridge collapsed, and after that, no one from the townspeople saw the moth-man again. Immediately there were suggestions that there was some kind of connection between these events.

Ufologists made assumptions that this creature either came to us from space, or is an unknown cryptid. American journalist and ufologist John Keel, who published the book "The Prophecy of the Moth Man" in 1975, was confident that the creature appeared as an omen to warn the residents of the city about the collapse of the bridge. By the way, a film was later shot on the basis of this work, in which Richard Gere played the main role. However, skeptics were convinced that the moth man was just someone's prank.

True or fiction, the city takes this legend seriously. There was even a statue of a moth-man in Point Pleasant.
