Specialists from the University of Bristol have developed a prototype nuclear battery that can supply less powerful devices with energy for millennia. At the same time, the emission of radiation and harmful substances is zero, according to the university website.
What does a nuclear battery consist of?
An artificial diamond is installed inside the nuclear battery. It generates a small electric current when placed in a radioactive field.
The scientists used nickel-63 as a source of radioactive radiation. However, if you replace it with carbon-14 generated in graphite blocks, the isotope can improve the efficiency of the device.
Carbon-14 battery will discharge to half in 5730 years
Nuclear batteries have no moving parts and do not need to be serviced during operation. The batteries do not generate radioactive emissions and do not adversely affect the atmosphere. Radioactive isotopes are actually encapsulated inside fake diamonds. This ensures long-term generation of clean energy.
