According to Fox5NY, the Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Emergency Management Agency are conducting Operation Gotham Shield. Its goal is to gain practical skills in assessing the situation, treating and evacuating victims during a potential nuclear attack in the New York area.
The exercise simulates a scenario in which a 10,000-ton improvised nuclear device explodes in the Lincoln Tunnel from the New Jersey side.
MetLife Stadium serves as the primary response center for multi-day training sessions. The stadium is located in East Rutherford, about 15 minutes from Manhattan.
The Emergency Management Departments of New Jersey and New York are also involved.
The exercise is part of several activities along the Northeast Corridor. Other similar trainings are taking place in Washington DC and Albany.
Federal officials say the exercise is not a response to any current events, including possible threats from North Korea.
This exercise follows a similar exercise in October, called the Northern Lights, which took place in Minnesota.
