“Modern historical literature - especially its“serious”, academic part - amazes the unbiased reader with a strange combination of factual completeness, thoroughness and meticulousness with amazing conceptual helplessness, a kind of“worldview infantilism,”ineptly hidden behind an abundance of special scientific terminology.
However, it would be unfair to blame exclusively modern historians for such sins. This disease of Russian historiography has a long-standing and protracted character.
The Mystery of the Vladimir Principality Already since the 18th century (in fact, since the birth of the "secular" historical science, fundamentally different from the church, monastic chronicle), Russian researchers of our past, for some inexplicable reason, preferred to equate the historical achievements of conciliar Russian spirituality and the sovereign Russian statehood with those natural temptations of life that are invariable companions of sinful earthly life, both in the fate of an individual person, as well as in the existence of entire nations and states. Moreover, over time, the higher, providential sense of human destiny was completely erased in the "progressive" minds of our learned men, as a result of which everyone began to shred the past of Russia at random, as soon as he pleased, in the light of his wretched "common sense",and materialistic, God-fighting social theories that were gaining strength.
This process reached its logical conclusion in the "secular historical science", for which there was no historical conscientiousness at all. The facts, it seemed, existed only in order to construct ideological props for decaying dogmas through their selective use. One must, however, be aware that such a deplorable state of "historical science" in the USSR was a logical and natural consequence of its development in Russia in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Already in the writings of Karamzin (who, we must give him justice, still did not fall into explicit social theorizing), one can find such arbitrary and vivid emotional generalizations of Russian antiquity that, taken together, they paint Russia almost like “an earthly hell , Seething with lawlessness, cruelty and vices. The receivers of Karamzin are Soloviev. Zabelin, Kostomarov, Klyuchevsky and others - for all the difference in their personal and scientific positions and political sympathies, significantly strengthened this vicious methodological principle in their research.
Reading their reasoning about the crucial, fateful periods of Russian history, getting acquainted with the conclusions they draw from these tragic and at the same time heroic events (be Troubles, Schism, or the era of Ivan the Terrible), you inevitably fall into captivity of painful heartbeat: what is Russia? Sometimes penetrating with confidence in such authoritative conclusions and assessments, the mind of an impartial reader is faced with an insoluble contradiction between the majestic results of the historical existence of Russia and its hopeless "backwardness", so unconditionally recognized and so vividly described on the pages of multivolume studies and monographs.
And in fact: how did the Russian people, so inclined (according to our would-be historians) to anarchy and arbitrariness, so lazy, inert and unacceptable, so indifferent to personal freedom and legal norms of community, managed to build the world's greatest Power, not only the first largest occupied territory and the composition of the tribes included in it, but also the most stable historically, for five millennia in a row being the "harmonizers" of the huge Eurasian geopolitical region?
How did this "ignorant" people manage to create the richest culture, the fruits of which - in the field of literature and philosophy, painting, poetry and architecture - still feed the decrepit and lost West? How did the Russian man manage to overcome the terrible spiritual infection of international communism, which not only could not destroy the Russian statehood, but - contrary to its own nature - found itself involved in the sovereign construction of the Empire, which put half the world under its control and openly claimed the second half? How, finally, did this strange people manage to preserve the Orthodox faith and the Holy Church, the ideals of non-acquisitiveness and mercy, courage, humility and sacrifice - despite the most terrible theomachous tyranny, before the horrors of which even the pagan persecutions of the Roman Caesars against the first Christians fade away?

Christianity categorically does not accept the so-called "moral dualism", which asserts the pernicious delusion about the equality of good and evil. Good, solemn to Truth and Love, is God Himself in His omnipotence, providently turning even the fall of human nature, distorted by passions, for the benefit of people - giving them the opportunity to salvation and gain eternal life through the sacrament of repentance. Evil has no essence. It is only a distortion of the Divine harmony of the universe, the regrettable absence of the grace of God (so darkness does not have an independent power, being only the absence of light), rejected by that part of intelligent creatures who consciously and freely reject God in the madness of pride and fatal vanity.
Only with such a worldview can one unravel the numerous riddles of the stormy Russian fate, penetrate into its mysterious, innermost meaning. Only in this way does our past become instructive and understandable, moreover - kindred close and beloved for every well-meaning researcher. So the abyss of inexorable time disappears, and the triumph of living faith makes it possible to realize the greatness of life's feat, equal to the Terrible Tsar Ivan Vasilyevich and the truth-lover Philip, the Metropolitan of Moscow, allegedly noticed by his order. The highest truth of the Quietest Sovereign of Russia Alexei Mikhailovich and his "sobin" friend, and then the disgraced opponent and denouncer of Patriarch Nikon. The significance of the holy Elder Seraphim of Sarov, Tsar-Martyr Nicholas, invincible Zhukov, terrible Stalin and caricature, farcical figures of the current Russian turmoil is becoming clear …
The truth contained in each of them belongs to God, who is the only Source of all goods, both earthly and heavenly. Hatred, lawlessness and lies are an evil devilish temptation, inspired by the enemy of the human race and the persecutor of all truth, "a man-killer from time immemorial," according to the word of Holy Scripture.
It's a shame that Russian "historians" (and after them - and politicians) of the last two centuries have not managed to rise to the level of the highest responsibility of their ministry. Their labors - alas! - became a source of delusion for hundreds of thousands and millions of Russians who lost understanding of the higher meaning of Russia's existence and, accordingly, spiritual immunity against destructive social theories and alien “values” of theomachy, Russophobia and militant individualism. The view of the Russian past, damaged by unbelief, concentrating on evil and not being able to correctly explain its origin and nature to oneself, led in the end to the embodiment of this concentrated evil in the real Russian reality of the 20th century.
Now we must reverse these pernicious tendencies in our lives. A necessary stage on this path will be the return of national history, its sacred meaning, its moral greatness and natural spiritual completeness.
But not disfigured by the "political expediency" of the next opportunistic work of professional ideologists, not spoiled by a glance at the "progressiveness" and pseudoscientific independence of the work of "candidates for doctors" should be the basis of the grandiose work on the conceptual revision of the thousand-year Russian life. No - only true scientific conscientiousness and love for the Fatherland not subject to political conjuncture can complete this difficult, sometimes painful and painful process - in close alliance with Faith, Hope and Love - the three main Christian virtues that allow you to look at the world soundly, directly and without distortion!
At the same time, when we manage to achieve the rehabilitation of the spiritual meaning of Russian life, awareness of the providential content of our past and present, when this moral and religious “disinfection” of the modern ideology of the Russian revival is completed, the prophecy of the holy Psalmist-Prophet will come true over Russia: “Will not come to evil to you, and the wound will not approach your body, as with His Angel the commandment about you, keep you in all your ways. They will take you in their arms, but not when you have stumbled your foot on a stone: step on the asp and the basilisk, and trample the lion and the serpent …”(Ps. 90: 14-16).
The Holy Gospel says about the same: “The serpent will be revolted; If even what mortal they drink, it does not harm them …”(Mark 16:18).
