“There was a Serpent-Beast, this Serpent-Beast lived in this very place, that's where now this very skete of the saint stands Peryunskaya. Every night this Snake Beast went to sleep in Ilmen-Lake with the Volkhov cowshed. The snake moved to live in Novgorod itself; and at that time Volodymer was born - a prince in Kiev; the same Volodimer the prince who brought Russeya to the baptized faith. Prince Volodimer said: “The whole Russian land is to be baptized. Well, Novgorod - the same. " Novgorod was baptized. The devil cannot live with God. The new city grabbed the snake … and threw it into Volkhov …"

RUSSIA - THE HOMELAND OF SNAKES

The Russians, as you know, have their own pride. Fans of Eastern astrology on the eve of the New Year would like to remind you that Dragon (δράκων) is a term of Greek origin, which is a collective name for various kinds of reptiles.

In the Russian language there is a bright and figurative word - SNAKE. And, of course, we cannot ignore our beloved character the GORYNYCH SNAKE, who will easily give odds to all foreign dragons on New Year's days.

First, he has 3 to 12 heads.

Secondly, how many heroes he exalted and glorified. In addition to the top three leaders of the hit parade of Muromets, Dobrynya and Alyosha, these are also Nikita Kozhemyaka, Eruslan Lazarevich, Ivan Bykovich, etc.

Thirdly, his love of love … But more on that later.

In the meantime, it is necessary to debunk several myths and stereotypes regarding the origin of the hero. In a way, it is insulting for the state.

So myth 1:

Snake worship, widespread among many peoples, has never been characteristic of the spirit of the Russian people. In Russia, starting from the most primitive stage of development, they always treated the snake as a lower (albeit gifted with cunning wisdom) being and did not look for an object of deification in the reptile.

These are the plates for clothes and bags that were made by bone carvers from Veliky Novgorod (XIV century)

Their favorite subject is the images of dragons with a serpentine body and wings (the last exhibit in this series is a leather applique).

We also see them on the house platband from Rostov the Great.

The cult of the lizard snake among the Slavs and Finno-Ugrians of the North-Western region was analyzed in detail by B. A. Rybakov, an archaeologist and historian, academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the author of fundamental works on ancient Russian culture. "Korkodelu"), the master of the waters, "lying in Volkhov."

This is the "water king", whose guest was the guslar merchant Sadko. The scientist established that the archaic layer of legends about the game of the wise guslar ("He was a cunning Mudder of the cunning Sadko, Yen went all the way to the lake …") is nothing more than a part of an ancient ritual at a sacred place called after 980 Peryn, and at an earlier time dedicated to the god of the river, the "displeased sorcerer" Volkhov, who is transformed into the image of Korkodel.

The title of the post contains a quote from the story of the old boatman about the Snake Beast, recorded in 1859 by the collector of folklore P. I. Yakushkin while traveling past the Perynsky skete.

And the first mentions in Russia of the "fierce beast karkodel" date back to the 7th-8th centuries, when the first groups of Slavic settlers began to arrive on the banks of the Volkhov, Ilmen, Luga, Velikaya and Ladoga. Oral rumor carried them to the chroniclers.

It should be noted that the existence of various dragon-like evil spirits in our area is confirmed from other sources.

Sigismund Herberstein (1486-1566), ambassador of the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire to Russia, writes in his "Notes on Muscovy":

And these are already new times:

The paper was signed by the Zemsky Commissar Vasily Shtykov.

Our main Novgorod Serpent-Korkodel still inspires people to create such poems. If we exclude the unsuitable and damaging rhyme to the word "ear", it is written very strongly.

RUSSIAN KNAKE IS THE BEST KNAKE IN THE WORLD

Myth 2:

The Serpent Gorynych meant, first of all, formidable dark clouds that obscure the path of the sun's rays in the sky and deprive the living world of the main source of life. With the passage of time, the dragon-serpent is no longer associated with the cloud itself, but with lightning flying out of the “heavenly mountain”, the serpentine nature of which, as it were, reinforces this image.

Myth 3:

According to the latest scientific data, the Serpent Gorynych turned out to be not a living creature, but a throwing projectile, a secret weapon of the Tatar-Mongol, like "Greek fire".

I am just bursting with laughter when I hear about such "latest scientific evidence".

Did their author read the epic about Dobryna Nikitich and the Serpent Gorynych? I guess not. Otherwise I would ask myself the question: why the main occupation of this "atmospheric phenomenon" or "projectile" was visiting different wives and girls, and sometimes their abduction.

Here is an example from the epic. Once Gorynych got into the habit of flying into the loft to a certain Marina Ignatievna. Bogatyr Dobryna did not like this connection, and he took prompt measures:

Dobrynya took out his saber, Raised above his violent head:

But even after that, the macho-Gorynych did not calm down and kidnapped the niece of Prince Vladimir himself:

Vladimir stolnekievsky will speak:

After that, completely chaos began, and the snake stole Dobrynya's aunt, Maria Divovna.

The fight went not to the stomach, but to death.

But the hero overpowered Gorynych and this time killed him. A lot of serpentine blood flowed out, Dobrynya stood in it for three days, did not know how to get out. On the fourth day

Dobrynya heard a voice from heaven:

The happy ending is captured in the painting by I. Ya. Bilibin "Dobrynya Nikitich frees Fun Putyatichna from the Snake Gorynych" (1941)

However, such bloody showdowns did not always come to pass. In Russian bylichkas and former times, it was described many times how the Serpent flew peacefully to lonely ladies, most often soldiers and widows:

And this is the plot of "The Tale of Peter and Fevronia", a masterpiece of Russian literature of the 16th century. The ruling prince Pavel ruled Murom. And so, the winged serpent began to fly to the wife of that prince for fornication. And, by his magic, he appeared before her as the prince himself was sitting with his wife. This obsession continued for a long time. The wife did not hide this and told about everything that happened to her, to the prince, to her husband. And the evil serpent took possession of her by force.

And where after all this to our Gorynych boring western dragons! They thought only about gold, and if they abducted virgins, it was exclusively for gastronomic interests.

And our Snake sings well, performing under the stage name Tugarin. Which clearly hints at the Eurasian vector of development of events: the North-West and Kiev are obviously cramped for a reptile.

HORYNYCH AND NOW ALIVE ALL LIVING

The statistics of the occurrence of flying kites since 928. before the beginning of the XXI century. given here. Naturally, the Novgorod Region is among the most snake-prone regions of the Russian Federation.

Red - the areas where the flying kite is most often observed: Russia: Arkhangelsk, Novgorod, Vladimir, Ryazan, Astrakhan, Omsk, Oryol, Tambov, Kirov, Samara, Smolensk, Yaroslavl regions. Ukraine: Transcarpathia, Polesie

Here it is immediately necessary to distinguish between two large groups of phenomena.

The first is fiery snakes visiting widows and women whose husbands are engaged in a side trade (seasonal work outside the place of residence, when it is necessary to “leave” the village or village). Women with a weak psyche are also vulnerable.

In these phenomena, a stable connection can be traced: fiery serpent - incubus - vampire (deceased) - content - poltergeist. They were very common until the 1960s. Now they are rarely observed for two reasons:

1. Fire serpents are scared off by the increased electromagnetic background in cities and towns.

2. In the spirit of the space age, the "fiery guests" began to take on the image of highly developed aliens. Their sexual contacts began to be included in the "program of research and improvement of the human race." If earlier kikimors were born from the unions of fiery serpents with women, now from "aliens" some "human hybrids" are born.

The second group is the attack of flying kites in the swamps. Since the 1980s. their epicenter is the Vepsky bogs in the Leningrad region, more precisely, a circle with a radius of ~ 50 km. with the center at the head of the Kapsha River. Almost two dozen corpses were found here (local or newcomers, all stripped, no traces of violent death and the presence of alcohol in blood were found; money, clothing and valuable property were not touched).

All these cases were recorded in the police records, described in the local and central press. A large selection of them can be found on the cryptozoologists forum.

Another center of flying kites is the swamps in the Okulovsky and Malovishersky districts of the Novgorod region.

The flying reptile toxin has been reported to cause severe fever and mental confusion. The person sheds all clothing and dies from cardiac arrest or hypothermia (official diagnosis).

In the descriptions of the appearance of these kites, there are two signs: a comb on the head like a cock and leathery wings.

True, there are no wings in the only available drawing. This can be explained either by a stressful situation, or by the presence of another, "jumping" subspecies of the reptile.

Just in case: if you have to visit snake-prone areas, there are two things to keep in mind. The first is not to eat unfamiliar mushrooms.

And the second - you need to get away from the snake in zigzags or, using the following advice:
