We continue to study the mysterious place names of our country, which keep many secrets. Another name in Sanskrit is the village of Raja in the Batetsky district of the Novgorod region.

This word is familiar to absolutely everyone, we have heard it literally from childhood. Rajda is a ruler in India, and Raj is a very popular Indian name (think of the character in the popular TV series The Big Bang Theory).

This word comes from the Sanskrit root -rāj, which means “to be at the head of something”, as well as “to shine, sparkle” (from the same root the word rajana - silver).

It is surprising that a village with this name is located in the very heart of Russia. And this is not a modern name. The village of Raja is very ancient, there are references to it in the annals of 1500.

I happened to be in Batetsky district, and these are places covered with legends, where they constantly find amazing things from antiquity - they literally lie on the surface. There are especially many of them along the banks of the Luga.

Shum-Gora is also located here. This is an ancient burial mound, not yet excavated. According to legend, it contains a golden coffin with the body of Rurik himself. I was on this mound - now it is a cult place where lovers of antiquity and pagans gather. And many of them are looking for artifacts of antiquity here - and find.

It is curious that, according to researchers, an ancient city was located here a thousand years ago - one of the most important craft and trade centers of the Novgorod region. Its area was at least 10 hectares. According to archaeologists, this settlement was destroyed in a massive fire.

Perhaps this ancient city and a village with a Sanskrit name are somehow related …
