Jaria is located above a huge underground fire that has been burning for 100 years. And sometimes huge burning craters open up and consume everything above them.
The fires began in 1916 and are the result of improper closure of coal mines. Currently, about 70 fires are burning.
Twenty years ago, the earth opened up and destroyed 250 homes in just two hours. Over time, the flames consumed 41 million tons of coal.
Humans live in the midst of smoke and toxic fumes that constantly seep out of the earth, causing breathing and skin problems.
Some people steal coal from mines, sell it in local markets or use it for cooking and heating.

Underground fires are known to be difficult to extinguish. Some experts say Jariya has enough coal to burn it for another 3,800 years.
