Client biometric data can become a new source of income for Russian banks.

The largest collector of biometrics in the country - Sberbank - is interested in selling access to its database. Kirill Bogdanov, Aeroflot's Deputy General Director for IT, told TASS at the Wings of the Future Forum.

According to Bogdanov, Aeroflot is interested in using biometric data of customers by Russian airports in order to use them when registering passengers and recommends that airports apply for biometrics to Sberbank or Rostelecom, which is authorized by the state to collect such information.

“There are two trends, the first is to collect biometrics in a bank, in this case the largest collector of biometrics is Sberbank, it is interested in selling access to those biometric data that they have collected from their clients. And the second is the state represented by Rostelecom, - said Bogdanov.

“In my opinion, it is more correct to have a relationship with the state,” said the top manager, adding that the issue of using biometric data collected by Rostelecom had already been discussed with Sheremetyevo.

Russian banks have launched a service for collecting customer biometrics, which will allow them to provide services remotely by children in 2018. By 2021, according to the calculations of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation, banks will be able to provide not only financial, but also government services on the basis of remote biometric identification. By January 1, 2019, banks should have introduced biometrics in 20% of their branches, by the middle of the year this share should have grown to 60%, and by the end of the year - to 100%.

The Central Bank and members of the Fintech Association were developing the platform for remote biometric identification. The technological implementation of the project was undertaken by Rostelecom, which was supposed to ensure its integration with the Unified Identification and Authentication System (ESIA).

ESIA already contains the personal data of the majority of Russians who in one way or another use state services. Now banks will also get access to it, but they will not be able to provide public services for now due to inconsistency with the information security requirements of the FSB and FSTEC.
