It was a warm September 1992 evening. The sun hanging low on the horizon was large and red. Two sailors, who did not manage to carry out repair work on the fuel intake system of the boiler house in a day, came to the pier of the unit after dinner. The next day, a tanker with fuel oil was waiting, so the work had to be completed today. The well in which they had to work was thirty meters from the pier. Here, next to the well, there was a road leading to the technical facility of the unit.
The sailors opened the hatch, and one of them went down into the well. The second, lying on the ground, bent over the hatch, handed the first the necessary tools and materials. They worked like this for about ten minutes, when the one above noticed a shadow on the ground next to him. He looked up from the hatch and saw a woman. He could not see her - he was looking against the setting sun, and even after he had looked into the darkness of the well. He was only struck by the fluffy hair of a bright red color, framing the stranger's head with a continuous radiance.
Stunned by what he saw, the sailor sat down at the hatch and screwed up his eyes, looking up at the woman. And then she asked - "Can you tell me what time it is?" The sailor had no choice but to answer her. “Ten to eight,” he said, glancing at his watch. The red-haired woman, without saying anything more, turned and walked along the road to the pier. The road at this point makes a turn, and between the well and the pier there is a structure - a monjus one, which did not allow the sailor to see the pier from the place where he was. Therefore, when the second sailor stuck his head out of the well, he only had time to see how the woman, taking another three or four steps, disappeared behind the Montjus room.
The sailors discussed for a couple of minutes - who is she? where did it come from? where did you go? Then they followed her. Coming out from behind the Montjus, they saw a completely empty pier. The woman was nowhere to be found. In three or four minutes, it was impossible to go anywhere, and there was nowhere to go - on one side the coast rounded off, goes to the road along which they came, on the other, a small, well-visible section of the coast ended in a sheer cliff going straight into the sea … In addition, this piece of sushi is fenced off by two rows of barbed wire. The only possible route was to the pier, but the pier was empty. The guys had already reached the end of the pier - there was no one and nothing there either, only the water was quietly splashing on the piles. Looking around, they saw that a sentry was looking at them from a distant tower. From the tower the sentry could see the pier only from the middle. The beginning of the pierthe Montjus and part of the road with a well were hidden from it by a rocky ledge. The sentry also saw the road from the pier to the object only starting from about fifty meters from the well. But then they could see the whole road.
After stomping on the pier, looking under it, the sailors returned to the well - it was late, and tomorrow morning the tanker had to finish work. It was already dark when, having repaired the valve in the well, they went to the exit from the zone and there reported what they saw to the radiation safety officer on duty and the chief of the guard. These officers, not really believing their story, nevertheless went to the pier. After checking everything there, nothing suspicious was found.
In the morning a tanker arrived. For two days everyone was busy receiving fuel oil. There was no time to think about a mysterious story with a woman who had come from nowhere and mysteriously disappeared. The sailors who met her could not even describe her properly. They practically did not see her face, they did not see her clothes - they looked at her against the setting sun. They only said that she was quite tall, very slender, and with a whole cloud of fluffy red hair. Both of them are convinced that they saw a "mermaid" that came out of the water and then back into the water and returned. But they were not believed. They said that they were overworked and they just imagined it.
And indeed, where did a woman with red hair appear on the pier, in the carefully guarded zone of a military unit? After all, the sailors themselves, in order to get to the place of work, had to go through two control posts, and even on the special instructions of the chief of the guard. There is no other way, bypassing the sentries, to the pier - except perhaps through ravines and barbed wire, but even then the sentries would certainly see it. Yes, this does not explain the second - where did she go later when she went to the pier. So this case remained another mystery of the MM Zone (Cape Maydel).
