Russian scientists have begun to create a quantum computer, said Sergey Garbuk, deputy general director, head of information research at the Advanced Research Fund (FPI).

The FPI Scientific and Technical Council approved the project to create a quantum computer in Russia in 2018-2021, Garbuk said in an interview with RIA Novosti. A multi-qubit quantum computer could be created in the fall of 2021.

The main executor of the project is the Competence Center of the National Technological Initiative in the field of quantum technologies, created at the Faculty of Physics of the Moscow State University. Lomonosov Moscow State University. “Together with the Moscow State University, work is carried out by a number of other organizations. We strive to organize the work before the launch of the project in such a way that other development institutions and customers participate in its financing,”Garbuk explained.

In particular, FPI holds meetings to coordinate work with the Russian Venture Company, ANO Digital Economy, and the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. “We believe that such coordination of work at the federal level is extremely important in this case. This is a new business. We are at the beginning of the journey. If successful, this technological direction promises huge advantages for our country. It is important to take into account the interests of all parties and participants,”concluded Garbuk.

A quantum computer is a computing device that uses quantum mechanical effects in its work. Such computers will receive a huge advantage over conventional computers in terms of calculating complex systems and decoding arbitrarily complex ciphers.

An agreement on a scientific and technical project to create a multi-qubit quantum computer was signed in February 2018 at the Russian Investment Forum in Sochi between Vnesheconombank (VEB), VEB Innovations, FPI, Moscow State University and ANO Tsifrovaya ekonomika.

The agreement became the basis for the creation of a quantum consortium. This format of interaction will allow a large number of Russian research teams, financial organizations and potential consumers to take part in the implementation of breakthrough projects in quantum technologies.
