Of the huge number of mysterious incidents that exist in the biography of North America, one of the first and most mystical is the mystery of the disappeared colony of Roanoke Island.

In 1587, the first group of English settlers came to this small piece of land. It was planned that the settlement of the British on the mainland would begin from this place. Over a hundred people, having received an order from Governor John White, with children, settled on the island.

The idea was that while the ship that brought them went to England for food, the colonists would study the area in detail and try to identify other options for food. But how strong was the surprise of the sailors when, upon arriving on the island, they did not see a soul.

Every member of the colony settled on Roanoke Island disappeared without a trace. The houses were deserted and there were absolutely no signs of life. The absence of signs of struggle and violence was especially struck by the witnesses, because the only assumption of the disappearance of people was an attack by the Indians.

There was only one clue for the specialists who are already investigating the disappearance of people - two words in the trees. One bore the inscription "KROATON". It means a settlement of Indians who lived nearby and the area itself. The second tree was engraved with "KRO". Of course, one could assume that people left for that area, but in any case, there were some nuances.

Firstly, before the settlement of the Indians, who, by the way, were very friendly, there were about 80 km. It just would be illogical to go there at once with the whole settlement, together with women and small children. Secondly, by agreement with the governor, the Roanoke colonists were obliged to place a cross on the inspected place if a situation arose when it was necessary to urgently leave the camp. Since the cross was not found, then, most likely, people left peacefully, but why is not clear.

Today there are a number of versions of what actually happened to the Roanoke colony. The most famous of them say that the British assimilated with the Indians, but in this case it is difficult to explain the absence of artifacts: clothes or utensils from the local tribes.

According to the second hypothesis, all 117 people were destroyed by an unknown hostile tribe of Indians, which accidentally wandered into this area. Naturally, it was not done without absolutely incredible assumptions, within the framework of which the version of abduction by aliens and the presence of portals to other dimensions is presented.

No matter how many versions are put forward, the mystical disappearance of the Roanoke colony to this day remains a blank spot in the history of America.
