The story is told by a resident of Minnesota and was published a few days ago in a fresh audio recording of the Beyond the Darkness podcast channel, published by anomalous researcher Dave Schrader.

The woman asked Dave not to be named. This story happened in the 70s at a ski resort along the Saint Croix River in Minnesota.

“When a ski resort was opened in our sparsely populated area in 1975, for us it was like getting a cool fashionable smartphone as a present. My classmates and I immediately joined the school ski club and went skiing on the snowy slopes every Thursday.

I went to college in 1977 and was now home only on holidays and vacations, but every time I went I tried to ski. This time it was during the winter holidays and my sister, niece and her friend went skiing with me.

We arrived in the evening and skated for a while, and then I was left on the slopes all alone, everyone else went to rest. There was a frost of about -10 Celsius, it was snowing a little and there was a slight wind. After skating, I returned to the chalet, but our company was not there in its usual place.

With great difficulty I managed to find my sister in the bar of the chalet and I asked her where the girls had gone. She said that she last saw them on the piste at a point called Moonshine, and then thought they were with me. I immediately realized that the girls were most likely lost in the forest, Moonshine is at the top of the mountain, there is the border of the resort, beyond which a dense forest begins.

While my sister was worried and running, preparing to go outside, I got ahead of her and found myself on the slopes earlier and again all alone. Now the mountain no longer seemed to me a place for fun skiing, it was a cold and barren place, where danger seemed to be seen behind every hillock. The resort, which I seemed to know to the last meter, suddenly turned into something sinister.

I reached the lift, the operator of which was supposed to lift me up and exchanged a couple of phrases with him. He, too, was worried about the children and said that in a few minutes a ski patrol would go looking for the girls.

As I drove to the top, frames from the new film "Snow Beast" about a yeti that attacked guests of a ski resort were playing in my head all the time. Obsessive shots could not get out of my head.

When I got to the top, I was overwhelmed by fear and realized that I was becoming paranoid. I felt that I was being watched and that my fall or noise would be a fatal mistake. Finally I went to the Moonshine slopes and started looking for possible traces of the girls. There were only 2 tracks, one for 3 miles and the other for 5 miles. I chose the one where ski tracks were visible in the fresh snow.

I was still very scared, although there was no significant reason for fear in sight. But it was something deep, subconscious. The lanterns burned dimly on the sides of the track and I was able to see that the paired ski tracks went off the track right into the blackness of the forest and these tracks were already covered with snow so that it was clear that whoever drove here had done it an hour or two ago.

I looked into the darkness, trying to make out at least something behind the trees, and did not dare to follow the tracks, but then I realized that I had to do it, because there were no back tracks of the skiers, both girls were somewhere ahead. It was possible to leave the track without returning to the track only along a narrow mountain trail called the Devil's Run, whose name spoke for itself.

I hesitated a little more, looking back, because the ski patrol was about to approach. But there was no one and delay seemed to me like death. Finally I made up my mind and entered the forest strip.

After walking a little, I began to shout loudly, calling my niece by name and soon two children's voices answered me at once. But what were these voices, they were screaming screams filled with horror! And through these screams one could make out the phrase “He is killing us!”.

Hearing this, I froze in shock, and then the screams began to subside and instead of them only a quiet plaintive sob was heard. Then I started screaming myself and did it according to the sensations for quite a long time, and then it seems I lost consciousness. I came to my senses when I saw that a man from the ski patrol was walking to this place in my tracks. When he approached, the sobbing in the forest stopped.

I rushed to him and began to talk about what I had heard, but he looked at me very strangely, he did not believe me, or probably thought that I was crazy. Then he turned and walked back to the ski slope, I rushed after him to get him back, because the girls were still there in the forest!

I followed him, but I caught up and grabbed his hand only below, descending on the lift from the top. And he said to me “Go home, there was nothing in the forest”.

I didn't understand what was happening. For a few more minutes I stood there with him and talked about the children screaming in the forest. He only reacted to everything with requests that I go home. In desperation, I rushed to the lift again to get back, but they shouted to block it. And then I saw my sister walking in our direction with another member of the ski patrol.

She began to tell me that she was with the ski patrol and that they immediately heard the girls crying among the trees and found them and that everything was fine with them and the girls were already in the chalet. I ran there and found my niece and her friend there. They didn't say anything, but they didn't look wounded.

Then I went to the owner of the resort and began to tell him everything I saw and heard, and he looked at me strangely. It seems that he was not at all surprised.

I was still in a state of shock and asked to let me go back to the mountain, but he refused. He seemed to be hiding something, and then he told me to stop thinking about it, since they were just “ghosts”. I was tired of arguing and then we took our things and my sister, niece and her friend returned to our car.

What happened completely unsettled me, I felt that something was happening here, but it all made no sense.

We drove home in complete silence. None of us wanted to say anything. I dropped the girls off near their house, and then went with my sister to my place. It was quiet, dark, and why there was an impenetrable darkness in the rear-view mirrors, although we had just passed the farm, near which the lanterns were burning.

An intense fear stabbed me through again, the hair stood on end on my head and tears rolled down my cheeks. I heard a sob and saw that my sister was crying too. She looked in the mirror and she looked as if she saw something there and it scared her.

Only half a mile later the feeling of unreasonable terrible fear left us and the road lights began to be reflected in the rear-view mirrors again. We drove the rest of the road without incident, and then I asked my sister what she saw in the mirror. And she said she saw death itself that followed our car.

She refused to say anything more about it and afterwards did not recall this incident, except once when she said that she had seen a huge black shadow with red eyes.

I myself have never visited this resort again and never saw its owner. Only a few years ago I decided to tell this story to my acquaintances and then I was told that several more people had experienced something similar in that place. But I never learned much of what happened to me that late evening.

Who were these screaming children? I searched for old murder reports in the area, but I couldn't find one. What attacked and killed them? What followed our car that night? My sister felt that it wanted to catch up with us for some reason. Until I die, I will not forget these screams in the forest."
