Lake Angikuni, covering an area of 510 sq. km. considered one of the largest bodies of water in Canada. But it became famous not for this, but for the events that took place here in 1930. Then all the inhabitants of the Eskimo village, located on the shore of the lake, disappeared. And in one day. Not only the living have disappeared, but also the dead from the graves. To this day, no explanation has been found.
Mysterious disappearance
These places have long been famous for the abundance of fish and fur animals. That is why the Inuit (an ethnic group that is part of the larger group of "Eskimos") settled on the shores of Lake Angikuni, organizing the settlement of the same name.
Even in spite of the fact that it took a long time to reach the nearest settlement, overcoming difficult terrain. But here the Kazan River flowed nearby, in which trout and pike were found, and in the surrounding forests, hunting was always successful.
The Inuit weren't the only ones who hunted. This area, like a magnet, attracted all kinds of hunters and fishermen. Of course, not everyone could overcome superstition. The fact is that the locals considered the lake and its surroundings to be the abode of evil spirits, which from time to time reminded people of themselves.
However, few people believe in the old legends in our time. In addition, the desire to get rich outweighed fears. Those who were especially hardy and persistent sooner or later got to this remote corner untouched by civilization.
One of these tenacious was the hunter Joe Labelle. This was not the first time the man had hunted in the vicinity of the lake. And always on the way back, he rested in an Inuit settlement. The villagers were famous for their cordiality and hospitality. The hunter could spend the night and have a hot meal in any home.

That year, frosts hit in November. Labelle was collapsing from cold and fatigue, but he knew that soon he would be fed and warmed. When the first buildings appeared, he greeted the villagers from afar. However, he did not hear the usual answer. Moreover, not only human voices were not heard, but also the barking of dogs.
Having reached the first house and entered it, the hunter found a still warm oven, meat stew was smoking on the table in a pot, but there were no people, and no dogs in the yard either. Labelle decided that the owners had gone to visit the neighbors, and went into their house, but the same picture was waiting for him there. As in other houses. Somewhere the tables were set for dinner, somewhere there was unfinished work: patterns, skins.
In addition, weapons, warm clothes, food - everything needed for a long hike was in place. The climate here is so harsh that no one left the house without these things. It seemed that people fled from the village light and in a hurry shortly before his arrival. But the strangest thing the hunter found was that there were no tracks in the snow near the houses. As if the Eskimos had disappeared into thin air.
The battered Labelle was so shocked by what he saw that, forgetting about fatigue, he did not stop in the abandoned village for the night. He went to the nearest village and telegraphed the incident to the Canadian police.
Mysterious phenomena
For several hours, a detachment of mounted police reached the Eskimo settlement. On the way, they were joined by three more men who hunted in the vicinity of the lake: Admand Laurent with two sons. Hearing about the deserted village, they told the police that not long before that they had witnessed a strange phenomenon.
A couple of days ago, having made a halt after hunting, they saw an unusual luminous object in the sky, which was slowly approaching Lake Angikuni. He then took the form of a cigar, then became like a spindle pointed on both sides. The hunters had never seen anything like it before. In their opinion, it could not be either the northern lights or a bizarre cloud …
Terrible mystical surprises awaited the group in an abandoned village. Labelle, due to his fatigue and shock, did not notice that the cemetery in the settlement was completely dug up. Not a single deceased remained in the open graves. Moreover, the excavations, it seems, were carried out with great care, and the tombstones were stacked evenly in a row.
The Inuit hardly did this, since they were sensitive to everything that was associated with the afterlife. None of them would have dared to do such barbarism. Of course, animals could have done all this, but they certainly would not have carefully folded the tombstones. In addition, the ground has already had time to freeze thoroughly, and a tool would be needed to dig graves.
Not having time to recover from the terrible find, the police found another one. Not far from the settlement lay the corpses of sled dogs, tied up in teams and covered with snow. Having examined them beforehand, the expert concluded that they all died of hunger. And this despite the fact that the houses were full of food, and the doors were not locked.
Eskimos could not kill animals, because sled dogs were of great value to them. They themselves could be left without food, but the dogs would be fed. It was also strange that no more than 2 hours passed between the disappearance of the inhabitants and the arrival of Labelle in the village, and the dogs had time to die and become numb.
Unanswered questions
This story became an instant sensation. After publications in newspapers, various versions of the disappearance of 2.5 thousand people began to appear.
The police, of course, tried to explain everything from a real point of view. For example, that the Inuit decided to change their place of residence, guided by some kind of religious beliefs, or living conditions forced them to do so. The version, I must say, is untenable. Why, when they left, did they not take with them anything from household utensils and food, why did their dogs die, why were there no human footprints in the snow?
No one could explain all this rationally.
No matter how strange it may seem, but the most plausible seems to be the assumption of the abduction of the Eskimos by aliens. Then, in the slightest degree, all these oddities could be explained. The appearance of a strange flying object just before that speaks in his favor.
By the way, in this area, neither before nor after the incident, no UFOs were observed. And no matter how much they looked, the descendants of the tribe were not found anywhere. Even if it was an attack, no traces of the struggle, like the remains of the dead, were found either. Unfortunately, after so many years, it is no longer possible to establish the truth.
Ghost island
Such a case is not unique in history. In Kenya, on the island of Envaitenet, located on Lake Rudolf, people also disappeared. The Elmolo tribe who lived there traded with other tribes. And one day, buyers who came by boats to buy goods found the aboriginal dwellings empty, while all their belongings remained in place.
Later, several research expeditions also disappeared on this island. Realists see the reason in natural phenomena. The lake is of volcanic origin, which means that it is possible that sometimes some gases are released from there, affecting the human psyche. Allegedly, under their influence, people rush into the water, where they die.
The mystics say that the island is home to many huge cobras, which may well be responsible for the death of people. After death, the souls of elders, sorcerers and hunters move into snakes and take revenge on people for the disturbed peace. But if snakes killed people, how then to explain the absence of the bodies of the dead?
