Who of us has not had this: suddenly you act contrary to all logic, you cannot give a rational explanation of your action, and only then comes the understanding that this is exactly what should have been done. Apparently, at such moments we are controlled by the subconscious. As proof, I want to tell two stories from my life.

July 1965. I just graduated from a military school and became a construction officer. I am traveling by suburban train to the place of my first service - to the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site. And I see: in front of me is Lieutenant Colonel Vauchsky, head of the top-secret research laboratory of the school. There were legends about him among teachers and cadets.

He often suddenly disappeared, then suddenly appeared to knock out funds for his secret research from the school budget, and again disappeared. Several senior students worked under his leadership, but no one knew what they were working on.

True, one of those guys, on behalf of Vauchsky, turned to me with a request to translate from English an article from an American military magazine about testing high-power ammunition.

And here is Vauchsky next to me, in the car, on the way to the nuclear test site.

So this is where he days and sleeps, that's where he disappears!

The lieutenant colonel noticed me and invited me to sit next to him. A conversation ensued. Vauchsky remembered how worried he was on the way to his first duty station. And suddenly he asked:

- How do you look at if tomorrow, when you introduce yourself to the commander, I go up to him and ask him to put you at my disposal? I am sure there will be no refusal.

Promotional video:

And he hints that I can write a dissertation under his supervision … But Vauchsky refrained from saying anything about the content of future activities. And I already guessed.

So, it's one thing to go into the unknown, another - here it is, help, support! Do science, research, experiment. And even the dissertation shines! But … I refuse:

- No, Comrade Lieutenant Colonel! Not with patronage, I need to start the service.

Why - and then he did not understand. But I really wanted to agree.

Over the next 10 years, two of my classmates and the guy to whom I translated an article from a foreign magazine died one after the other (he, by the way, very quickly became a doctor of technical sciences).

All three conducted experiments under the leadership of Vauchsky at the nuclear test site. And Nikolai Pavlovich Vauchsky later became the head of our school, lieutenant general and even an academician.

Now I know who warned me. Yes it is, dear subconscious! It sensed danger long before I could even grasp it.

Too calm

It was a winter evening in 2003 in Moscow. I was on a trolleybus. At one of the stops on Narodnogo Opolcheniya Street, a young man in a Bolognese jacket and a black knitted sports cap squeezed into a crowded trolleybus and stood next to me. "Killer" - for some reason I thought and looked at my watch. It was 18:45.

The next morning the TV news reported: "Last night, at about 18:30, at 26 Narodnogo Opolcheniya Street, on the staircase in front of his apartment, a famous businessman was shot in the head with a pistol … The killer mixed with the crowd of passers-by on the street."

Is this a coincidence? Hardly. It must have been the same killer. But why did I guess this?

I thought for a long time, and then I realized.

Yes, this man's face did not in any way resemble a typical criminal. Except … he was too calm. His whole appearance said that at that moment he controlled himself and inspired himself: “I am calm … I am calm … Not a single muscle on my face will tremble. I am calm … I am calm …"

And thus he stood out from others.

It was evening, people who were nervous, exhausted during the day, hurried home after work. Only one of them was calm … And my subconscious mind figured it out.
