Alcatraz was not always a prison island. Until 1934, it was used as a military prison after the American Civil War. Earlier it housed the Mexican military.
Many local tribes believed that the island was once occupied by a group of mystical creatures covered in feathers. People avoided the island, fearing that their souls would be stolen there. They say that its mysterious inhabitants had only one hand - the right, and in place of the left - a large wing. They were like a mixture of humans and eagles.
Sounds of Madness
There is a legend that inside Alcatraz the building's acoustics alone were enough to drive a person crazy. In the early years of the federal prison, the policy of silence was strictly enforced.

The inmates pleaded with the guards to break their silence, announcing that this was the worst kind of torture. But they were ignored. In 1937, a prisoner named Ruf Persful, who was allowed to work with tools, tried to cut off his hands with an ax. He managed to chop off fingers from one hand.
Ghost island
Alcatraz Island is considered one of the most visited places in North America. Paranormal activity was reported by both inmates and guards, and later by visitors.
They describe voices whispering from the walls of cells, the sounds of violin music or mechanisms that were in prison more than 50 years ago.
When Mark Twight visited the island, he wrote that the building was "cold as winter, even in the summer months." E. Floyd once said that "almost every guard and officer who served there … experienced something unusual."
The most frequent encounter reported by humans is seeing dark phantom figures walking down the corridors. These visions are often accompanied by the sounds of chains being dragged across the floor. It is said to be a Native American perfume that was previously contained in Alcatraz. A certain prison guard once reported seeing a group of soldiers walking in a circle, which suddenly disappeared.
One inmate said he saw glowing red eyes floating in the dark. The next morning he was found dead in his cell with strange markings on his neck.
