A married couple, who decided to visit one of the most famous prisons on the planet, were terrified when, during an excursion, they noticed a ghost woman at the window of the prison block.

The eerie photo was taken by Sheila Sillery-Walsh at Alcatraz Federal Prison, off the coast of San Francisco, California. The former prison, long considered one of the most visited places in the United States, was once home to hundreds of famous assassins, bank robbers and gangsters such as Al Capone.

Sheila's eerie photo shows a ghost girl staring straight through the window at the prisoner inspection camera. Sheila from Birmingham snapped a photo on her iPhone 5c when she visited the former prison in April while on vacation in San Francisco with her partner Paul Rice.

“Alcatraz Prison is a must-see for every tourist who comes to California. As soon as we entered the prison, we felt very uncomfortable,”a 48-year-old woman told reporters.

The couple were getting acquainted with the attraction via an audio tour when Sheila accidentally stopped to take a picture at the window of an empty block with her mobile.

“When I looked at the photo on my mobile, I saw this dark female figure in the picture. Then I looked out the window again, but there was no one in the room,”Sheila says.

The woman immediately concluded that the girl in the photo was a ghost. From that moment on, she said, she lost interest in touring Alcatraz, continuing to look at the creepy photo over and over again. According to the British woman, her companion never believed in ghosts, but admitted that the strange picture shocked him and shook his disbelief.

“When I first saw the picture, I tried to find a rational explanation for the female figure in the picture, convincing myself that it was just a reflection of Sheila,” the man said. “But upon closer inspection, it became apparent that this was not the case. The hair and clothes of this woman from another era - this is how the ladies of the 1930s or 40s dressed."

Paul admits that he never found a logical explanation for where the girl came from in the photo. The couple tried to figure out the identity of the ghost woman in the photo by contacting Alcatraz staff, but none of the old-timers were able to identify her.
