A New Zealand scientist will try to find traces of DNA from unknown animals in water samples from the Scottish Loch Ness.

Professor Neil Gemmell from the University of Otago in New Zealand is going to solve the problem of finding a mythical monster from the Scottish Loch Ness using DNA tests. He is going to take water samples, and then look for traces of unknown DNA in them using methods used by forensic experts, reports NewsHub.

Gemmel says: “All large organisms lose cells as they move through their environment. New genomic technologies are sensitive enough to detect them, and we can compare the found DNA fragments with those available in databases, which include most of the known living things. If there was something out of the ordinary in the lake, these DNA tools could provide evidence.”

Sampling will be carried out in 2017. British scientists have promised to help in this matter. However, in their opinion, it is not so important whether something will be found in the lake or not: this will not affect the views of ordinary people. The Loch Ness Monster is an urban legend. It tells the story of a large monster living in Loch Ness, Scotland. The direction of research on the search for this mythical character belongs to the pseudoscience of cryptozoology.
