After several years of searching, Polish archaeologists discovered the ruins of a medieval castle, which was the seat of the noble Tsiolek family.
According to Science in Poland, a late medieval castle was discovered on the territory of the Lubusz Voivodeship near the town of Lelechów. The search lasted for several years. Historians knew from several sources that in the Middle Ages there was a citadel in this area. She belonged to the Tsiolek family.
However, all written sources were burned at the end of World War II. Therefore, no information has been preserved about the location of the castle, nor about its size and the period of construction.
First, the area was scanned using laser technology, which helped to find the citadel and recreate its structure. Excavation began last year. The results surprised scientists.
Previously, archaeologists believed that there were massive brick and stone foundations underground, including the fortress wall. The assumption was based on the results of geophysical surveys. However, excavations showed that the castle was not surrounded by a wall. It was protected by an earthen rampart, fortified with stones. And the buildings around the owner's residence were mostly wooden.

“The oak beams are so well preserved that one might think they are modern material,” says Michal Zbiranowski from the Institute of History of the Polish Academy of Sciences. "The analysis allowed us to determine the age of the wood used for construction - it is approximately 1466."
Scientists note that wood and earth fortifications protected no worse than stone ones. It was also found that at first the castle had a square shape measuring 50x50 meters. Later it was increased to a size of 85x90 meters.
The finds showed that very wealthy people lived in the fortress. In particular, a tile similar to that found earlier in the residence of King Sigismund II was discovered.
Presumably, the castle was abandoned and abandoned in the 16th century. The reason was internecine wars.
