Often people, hearing the phrase "extinct animals", imagine dinosaurs, mammoths and other ancient inhabitants of the planet. Extinction, however, is an ongoing process. Over the past 25 years, the Earth's biological diversity has declined by a third. According to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), about three species of animals die out every hour, about 70 species of flora and fauna disappear from the face of the Earth every day. If the rate of extinction of animals does not decrease, then the situation will begin to resemble a new mass extinction.
Today, October 4, is World Animal Protection Day, designed to draw the attention of mankind to the problems of the rest of the inhabitants of the Earth. In honor of this day, our editorial staff will remind you of 10 animals that have become extinct over the past 10 years:
Abingdon elephant turtle. June 24, 2012. The last representative is Lonely George, who died at the age of over 100.
Western black rhinoceros. 2011. The species has become a victim of poaching.
Chinese river dolphin. The last individual was sighted in 2007.
Alaotran grebe. 2010 year. Mostly lived in only one lake in Madagascar.
Caribbean Monk Seal. 2008 year. It was last seen in 1952, but was officially declared extinct in 2008.
Eastern puma. 2015 year.
