Australia is expected to experience its coldest winter this year, with temperatures falling below -8 C as global cooling is occurring around the world.

David Taylor, editor and administrator of the East Coast weather bulletin, writes on Facebook that vast swaths of the country could be hit by snow and unprecedented weather.

Already today, in some places in Australia, the thermometer reads -10 Celsius, but "I would not be surprised if it snows even where it has never been," writes David Taylor. And his words mean a lot, as Mr. Taylor has made many impressively successful weather predictions in the past.

And all this is happening in Australia against the backdrop of an extraordinary winter in the Northern Hemisphere that has literally freeze out parts of the United States and Britain, where snowstorms have continued to rage since last week.

Mr Taylor said his forecasts are based on simulations of the Global Forecasting System, linked to sunspot activity and supported by statistics from the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts. In particular, he successfully predicted unusually heavy rain in Queensland, where 600 mm of precipitation was recorded on February 28.
