The use of artificial intelligence for military purposes has been the subject of heated debate for several years now. The US military department also thought about this. Since 2016, a specially created commission has been considering this issue, but now the military has moved from words to deeds, creating a Joint Artificial Intelligence Center, which will be the main link in the creation of a powerful military AI.

Of course, at the moment there is no question of creating "Skynet from the Terminator franchise". The US Department of Defense has just applied to the US Congress for funding for the AI Center. The required amount is US $ 1.7 billion, and the projects are scheduled for the next 6 years. According to US Undersecretary of Defense Patrick Shenghan, Despite the optimism of the military department, many people (including those involved in developments in the field of AI) do not share such views. As a counterargument, experts say that the machine should not decide whether to kill a person or not.

However, the Department of Defense and the US government have slightly different views. They see AI as the inevitable future of the military. And it has already planned development in three basic directions:

  • Creation of a system for the functioning of artificial intelligence, extending to the entire Department of Defense. In other words, setting up an infrastructure for the implementation of AI.
  • Improving collaboration on AI projects "both within the agency itself and outside." This implies cooperation with both US allies and private companies and scientists leading the development in the field of AI.
  • Implementing standardized methods for AI development, creating ways to control artificial intelligence, and finally putting AI into operation.
