On a cold November night in 1930, Canadian trapper JoLaBelle, exhausted by his search for refuge from a cold death, faced one of the greatest mysteries in human history: The once-thriving Eskimo village on the shores of Lake Angikuni disappeared without a trace.
With difficulty making his way through the loose snow, LaBelle cautiously surveyed the hushed village. Smoke billowed gray from the blackened pots of meat stew and rose ominously into the night sky. LaBelle realized that someone had been here just recently. Continuing his search, he looked around each hut, but saw only an untouched supply of clothing and food, stored by the Eskimos in order to survive the winter and to celebrate the anniversary of one of the elders. What could have caused them to leave the village, leaving the essentials?
However, during the entire search in the village, LaBelle did not meet a single living soul. There weren't even those dogs. As there was not a single trace in the pristine snow.
Horrified by what he saw, LaBelle hurried across the frozen ground to the nearest telegraph building. After suffering severe frostbite, he was still able to send word of help to the Canadian Mounted Police. Upon arrival, the police searched the village. What they found was truly terrifying. In the cemetery near the village, all the graves were dug up and completely empty. Also near the village, the police found a whole flock of sled dogs, starving to death and covered with a three-meter layer of snow.

Many of them saw strange blue lights pulsing on the horizon that night before disappearing into the darkness, police said. These lights were too dissimilar to the northern lights to be believed to be natural. Despite numerous investigations, the mystery of the disappearance of 2,000 Eskimos from Lake Angikuni was never solved and remained a mystery to subsequent generations.
