It is not yet known for certain what exactly caused the diseases that have been observed in cattle since last summer, but conservationists have already voiced the worst of the versions. Coincidence or not, but it was in the Spassky district in the summer of 2010 that a field experiment on gamma irradiation of seeds was carried out.
Strange picture: cows and bees are dying
As ecologists who have recently visited the Spassky region managed to find out, it all started last summer with cows. Sick calves began to have problems with motor activity: they could hardly get up from the ground, a limping gait appeared, and in the end the animal died. Residents of the village of Yambukhtino informed the environmentalists about the mysterious outbreak of diseases.
“All three passers-by with whom we talked were killed by an animal. They said the neighbors had the same thing. Therefore, they sent us to a local farmer who had the same problem,”Nelia Biktimirova, a representative of the Tatarstan branch of the Social and Environmental Union (SES), told reporters today. - We cannot give statistics, but following the results of a conversation with local residents, a strange picture emerges: either the residents themselves, or their friends, were killed last summer. And local beekeepers told us about the mass death of bees. This also happened last summer, at the end of the season."
This spring, strange diseases were already recorded in pigs with sheep. Fortunately, no new deaths have yet been recorded. By the way, it was noticed: in a number of cases, treatment - which, in particular, meant a change in diet - helped. The cryptic symptoms disappeared.
After that, you will inevitably ponder where the vegetables and grain grown on 600 hectares of district land from the irradiated material have gone. The ecologists could not get an answer to this question neither at the recent round table in the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Tatarstan, nor in the Spassky district itself.

Biktimirova announced a curious fact: in 2009 in Australia, cases of paralysis were recorded in cats fed with Orijen® dry food from Canada. As it turned out, the food was irradiated. According to the results of the inspection, its import into Australia was banned.
The most interesting thing is that cats in Australia also lost their hind limbs and suffered from physical activity - just like animals in the Spassky district. Moreover, if the owners promptly excluded food from the diet, many of the pets survived.
A local veterinarian, with whom ecologists managed to talk to during a trip to Spassky District, said that, most likely, the animals showed signs of osteodystrophy - a bone disease associated with metabolic disorders in the body. True, these ailments, according to the expert, were caused by the abnormal heat of the past summer. They say that the plants did not have enough nutrients. Similar ailments are sometimes observed in animals in the spring. Due to lack of vitamins.
Meanwhile, according to ecologists, studies back in the 50s of the last century showed that irradiation of foods can destroy up to 95% of the vitamins they contain. Vitamins A, B1, C, E, K. are most susceptible to the harmful effects of radiation.
Perhaps, Nelya Biktimirova admits, the abnormal heat of last year is really to blame for everything. But then why was she so selective about the Spassky District? Or have other municipalities simply concealed such facts? This is not excluded. Indeed, in the same Spassky district, ecologists complain, local authorities deny the existence of the problem.

Experiments on animals have proven that if they are fed with irradiated foods, they experience the same changes in organs and tissues as in radiation sickness. That is, these substances imitate the effect of radiation exposure.”These data, assures Dokuchaeva, can be drawn from the works of Soviet scientists published in the seventies and eighties. Alas, in the Isotop company, which decided to conduct a radioactive experiment in the republic, the existence of such studies seems to bethey just do not know. “Just the other day, Rosatom officially announced its intention to irradiate food products. The construction of the first universal irradiation center is planned for 2011-2013. Now the corporation is developing a regulatory framework in order to successfully implement this technology, - says Biktimirova. - By the way, this year, as representatives of "Isotope" reported in the branch newspaper of Rosatom, irradiation of feed is planned, next - chickens and eggs. Tatarstan is being turned into a testing ground for the introduction of nuclear technologies.”To avoid this, the ecologists asked the State Council of the Republic of Tatarstan to adopt a law that would prohibit the import of irradiated products into Tatarstan and, in addition, would prohibit irradiating them here. But radiation has different ways of penetrating the republic. Discussing the Spassky District, ecologists recalled another coincidence. Not far away, in the Ulyanovsk region, is the Dimitrovgrad Research Institute of Atomic Reactors. According to environmentalists, radioactive waste from this enterprise is simply pumped into the ground. If there is a leak (and its possibility is not allowed to exclude events in Japan), it is unlikely that it will seem to the Ulyanovsk region or its neighbors.
