White House spokesman Sean Spicer told reporters that there is a "deep state" in the United States, and it is trying to undermine the activities of the government of President Donald Trump, writes
The term "deep state", or Derin Devlet in Turkish, originated in Turkey in the 1950s and refers to a secretive network of powerful members of the military or government institutions outside the democratic system that is functioning.
The Deep State is believed to engage in covert manipulation or control of government policy.
According to Press TV, Spicer was asked by reporter Hunter Volcker of Yahoo News during a press conference on Friday if the White House believes that "is there such a thing as a deep state that is actively working to undermine the president?"
“I think there should be no doubt that when one side has been in a government office for eight years, there are people who remain or are associated with the government and they continue to support the agenda of the previous administration,” he said.
“So I don’t think it should come as a surprise that certain people have penetrated deep into the government in the eight years of the previous government and they believe that the agenda is ongoing and continue to implement it,” added Spicer.
“I don't think this should come as a surprise to anyone,” he continued.

Trump and his top aides believe that the remnants of the Obama administration are trying to discredit the new president's administration and orchestrating leaks of defamatory information in the media.
On Friday, US Attorney General Jeff Sessions asked 46 former prosecutors appointed by President Barack Obama to resign in order to ensure a “one-shot” transition to the administration of his successor Trump.
It came a day after Fox News anchor Sean Hainnity, who is a strong supporter of Trump, called for a "purge" of "Obama's holdover from the Deep State."
