The Maya believed in spiritual transformation and the acceleration of the evolution of consciousness, and this is described in their legends of the Thirteen Heavens and Nine Underworlds. This article will help you better understand the culture and traditions of the disappeared people.
Thirteen Heaven
Each of the Thirteen Heavens corresponded to a bird, and with each step of evolution the bird became larger - from the blue hummingbird of the first sky to the parrot of the thirteenth. The Thirteen Heavens are essential to understanding the 13-day Tzolkin cycle, the symbol for the entire cycle of creation.
Thirteen Heavens, according to Karl Johan Kalleman, reflect the creation of 13 long count baktuns, only on a different scale. Calleman points out that the design of the seven-step pyramids, like the pyramid of the high priest at Chichen Itza, also symbolizes 13 steps - up and down on both sides of the pyramid.
The odd-numbered years spurred progress and, interestingly, symbolized the “female” energy cycle; even years were patronized by deities associated with the masculine energy of death, war and destruction. We see this cyclical aspect in the hierarchy of heavens, where the even ones are the time of rest, and the odd ones are the time of novelty and activity.
According to Calleman, "The Thirteen Heavens of the Great Cycle reflect the cyclical, undulating movement of history."

According to The Calleman Matrix, the Thirteen Heavens cycle repeats itself in each of the Nine Underworlds - a kind of microcosmic-macrocosmic storyline based on a cycle of seven days - six nights.
Although the Thirteen Heavens are needed to understand the Mayan calendar, as well as the ideas of Mesoamerican civilizations about progress in biological and intellectual evolution, we are mainly interested in the Nine Underground Worlds - they are responsible for what "can happen" in 2013, as they tell about where we have been, where we are now and where we are going.
Nine Underground Worlds
Each of the Nine Underground Worlds symbolizes a shift in consciousness during evolutionary progress. The length of stay in each of the Underground Worlds is also of great importance, since it is there that the acceleration of time manifests itself especially clearly. In the following table, adapted from Callman's book The Mayan Calendar and the Transformation of Consciousness, we will clearly see how much it accelerates.
This table, obviously, reflects the movement from cellular life forms and consciousness to a higher level of existence, sweeping away all obstacles. The First Underworld begins at the time of the Big Bang, about 16.4 billion years ago, and lasts 13 Hablatuns of 1.26 billion years each. Both physical and conscious evolutions are accelerating, the duration of each period is shortening, and the Planetary, Galactic and Universal Underground Worlds pull us forward with an exponential acceleration.
Barbara Hand Clow, writer and member of the International Council of Elders of the Maya in her book The Mayan Code. Acceleration of time and the awakening of world consciousness ", describes it this way:" When a new Underworld begins, higher forms of life organize a more developed brain in order to receive more information from the Universe. Although the evolution of the previous Underworld is taking its course, the new Underworld brings its own changes, as time is greatly accelerating."
As we already know, each Underworld moves 20 times faster than the previous one.
Then Barbara Hand Clow moves on to the last Underworld, which will lead to the 2011-2012 time window: “During the 260-day Universal Underworld in 2011, the united whole consciousness will return to earth for the third time when we come into harmony with the Galaxy.
This period will come when we gain all the knowledge that we collected during the National and Planetary Underground Worlds, and we will try to integrate this knowledge in order to achieve enlightenment in 2011. This "integration of consciousnesses" will last less than one year, when the next twenty-fold acceleration awaits us."
Further, Hand Clow delves into the most detailed description of each Underworld, which we will not dwell on here - suffice it to say that Mesoamericans and their calendar systems, apparently, surprisingly accurately predicted the leaps of life along the evolutionary scale. Apparently, the Maya had a wide and deep knowledge regarding the "snowball effect" with which information is growing, and that the more we develop as humans, the more we become like gods (at least potentially).
To make things even more confusing, each Underworld is subdivided into seven days and six nights with their own meanings and purposes. The long counting calendar, calculated for 5125 years, refers only to the last four Underworlds, from the National to the Universal, so we will talk about them. Mesoamericans, including the Maya, Aztecs, and Toltecs, also believed in five worlds - another inner Tzolkin cycle. Each Underworld can be subdivided into Five Inner Worlds, just as the entire long counting system is also subdivided into Five Worlds.
The Fourth World of the Galactic Underworld will run from August 15, 2008 to October 28, 2011, according to Calleman, or December 21, 2012, according to Jenkins and his supporters.
Four Worlds.
Four Worlds, or Eras of Peace, 13 baktuns each (5125.36 years) make up one cycle of anticipation of the equinoxes approximately 25,627 years long. The Mesoamerican Eras of Peace roughly correspond to the Hindu Vedic Yugas, which describe the evolution of life and time on Earth. Unlike the fixed Worlds of the Mayan calendar, each successive south is shorter than the previous one.
The current south is a Kaliyuga, a period of darkness and despair, when the materialistic, greedy aspirations of humanity threaten to push our species beyond the brink of extinction. It is believed that the Kaliyuga is the last yuga, the time of destruction.
