The destruction caused by the storm in Sydney on February 7 continued the next day. A giant sinkhole has opened in an expensive suburb that Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull calls home.
Police ordered the evacuation of people from four nearby houses. The crater was formed just 500 meters from the Prime Minister's house. Experts believe that the hole was opened by the flood the day before. The hole size was about 15 × 10 × 10 meters.
Point Piper is considered one of the wealthiest suburbs in Australia, with a record home price of $ 6,365,000 in 2015.
The crater formed the day after a deadly storm that wreaked havoc across Sydney and New South Wales. One person was killed by a lightning strike.
Commentary: Until 2010, sinkholes were a relatively rare phenomenon. However, over the past 5 years, an unprecedented number of new sinkholes of hitherto unprecedented dimensions have begun to appear across the planet. In 2016, new sinkholes appear every day.
While not an isolated phenomenon, sinkholes are closely linked to other dramatic earth changes, including increased seismic activity, volcanic eruptions, strange sounds, and extreme weather events.
