“Do not be alarmed, we have a ghost here,” - with these words, the staff of the local history museum in Sudzha begin each excursion. Mysterious screams, a silhouette of a woman, whistling, crashing and broken exhibits on a locked floor - this is not the whole list of anomalous phenomena that took place in a state institution - a repository of age-old secrets. Now the ghost story gets its denouement …
It would seem that the plot is from the sensational "yellow" editions or fantastic thrillers in the spirit of Stephen King. But all the museum staff - people from the world of science - speak about this with one voice. We only retell what we have heard. In order to somehow stop the anomaly, the museum was even consecrated. Scientists and ufologists were invited here, they all came to the same conclusion - uncontrollable bursts of energy occur in the building, which people have not yet learned to see …
Do not be afraid, this often happens here
The museum is located in the brick house of the merchant Chupilov built in the late 19th - early 20th centuries. “Many museums, wishing to interest tourists, tell legends,” says Lyudmila Pridubkova, head of the Sudzhan branch of the regional museum of local lore. - However, what is happening with us does not look like "grandmother's fairy tales." When I came here after Voronezh University, I was met by women of venerable age, who had given the museum for many years. The first time I heard a heartbreaking cry on the second floor, I was very scared. And Olga Zhivoderova said: “Don't be afraid, this often happens here”.
Previously, the building housed the agricultural administration, and its employees repeatedly saw a transparent silhouette of a woman moving through the rooms in the evening. And somehow ghosts even predicted several deaths of members of the museum staff.
“Before that, in the morning I found an old gramophone completely broken. It seemed that he was thrown to the floor with terrible force, and then lifted and put in place. Later, sitting on the first floor, we heard an eerie rumble upstairs, but that floor was closed. Frightened, I ran to the bank next door, called the guards. When we went up to the second floor, everything was in place, the order was perfect,”continues Lyudmila Mikhailovna.
It's hard to wish for the best director of a museum. Coming to work, Lyudmila Mikhailovna greets the building and its mysterious occupant, and when she leaves, she gently says a farewell speech. He assures that the ghost of the museum kindly guards the premises and its employees, warning about events in their lives. Fear when "communicating" with him among employees has long been replaced by interest. The mystery of history is added by the fact that during the Great Patriotic War, before the capture of Sudzha by the Germans, almost all the archives were destroyed. It is not yet possible to find out for sure what happened in the old merchant building.

Legends were formed about the owner of the house, the merchant Chupilov, and his wayward character, passed from mouth to mouth. However, an unexpected find in the courtyard of the museum will force its employees to look more deeply for primary sources in the archives of Moscow and St. Petersburg.

About six months ago, museum workers began to hear an extremely unusual whistle - a drawn-out, strange sound, reminiscent of the play of a whistle. Then three visitors, independently of each other, told about a strange man in the courtyard of the museum: "Do you have a new watchman?" They asked. “Everyone described an elderly, unusually dressed man in boots and a waistcoat, who left the courtyard of the museum, it was unclear how through a locked gate he found himself on the street, and then disappeared somewhere,” Pridubkova recounts the words of eyewitnesses. “Maybe this is the owner of the building ?!”
The merchant Chupilov, according to the testimonies of old-timers, was withdrawn, wayward and imperious. I put a lot of pressure on my children. If the son went out of his subordination, then the merchant did not marry the daughter, protecting her from everyone, and she died of melancholy before her father. Chupilov himself, having lost his mind, did not bury his daughter, her remains were somewhere in the house …
A cursory examination of the premises and basement led nowhere. And here's an unexpected turn in history.
The building was closed for several months for technical reasons, and a crack found in the wall gave rise to a serious restoration. All exhibits were moved to a house nearby. The renovation has begun. Workers ripped open the floors, examined the foundation. They found a lot of interesting things: fragments of clay ceramics, forged nails, old bricks, buttons, a copper ring. And in the courtyard next to the museum, a burial of human remains was unexpectedly discovered … Presumably female.
“It turns out that the reason for the large-scale research was a crack in the wall,” says Lyudmila Mikhailovna. - Apparently, the time has come. There were no items with the remains - jewelry or amulets. But there are still some finds, while I will not talk about them. The remains were transferred to a forensic medical examination, but experts found it difficult to determine exactly when the burial was made. More research is needed. The experts named the approximate age of the deceased - 40-50 years.
Conclusions suggest themselves … However, museum staff need facts, not speculation. In the near future, Lyudmila Mikhailovna plans to take a vacation to go to the Moscow archive to study the history of the Chupilov family. By September, museum workers should have reliable information that they promised to share with DDD for the next detailed publication. At the same time, presumably, the remains will be buried in accordance with all Orthodox canons at the Sudzha city cemetery. And maybe the spirit of the merchant's daughter will finally be put to rest, and museum visitors will be able to calmly admire the exhibits without the disturbing phrase: "Don't be alarmed, we have a ghost here."
