For 33 years, the unfinished TV tower of Yekaterinburg gave birth to dozens of legends

How many people died here is not easy to count. Those who have fallen from metal floors are counted by serifs and graffiti left by friends. Meanwhile, the long-term construction even acquired its own legend. According to the townspeople, if you look at the top of the tower on a foggy evening, you can see the dark silhouette of a man smoking a cigarette - this is the guy who crashed here 20 years ago. They say he could climb the tower up the outer stairs while blindfolded. There were also those who voluntarily gave their lives to the tower. Three cases of suicide have been officially reported, but rumor has attributed more than 20 voluntary deaths to the high-rise. The unfinished TV tower has become a sacred symbol of the era. Those who wanted to create or destroy everything aspired here. Alexander Melnikov: "The tower is a sacred, supernatural symbol of the generation of the 90s era."
Having jumped from a 200-meter height, people simply did not have a chance to survive. Often, jumpers died before reaching the ground - they crashed against metal fittings. Rescuers had to put on climbing gear to get to the bodies. Evgeny Ilyubaev: “These were calls from police officers, whom we helped to get the bodies of people stuck at high altitudes.”
The record number of deaths is likely another reason why access to the TV tower was closed. However, as soon as this happened, new rumors spread around the city. Last year, in a series of Ural media outlets there was information that the TV tower may have cracked. Although the damage itself was not visible on the tower wall, the excitement of the residents is understandable. If the two-hundred-meter tower collapses, the consequences for the townspeople can be the most unpredictable.
A year ago there was no way to dispel the doubts of the Urals. Today it is known that the tower will be examined, and when the results are received, the fate of the mystical long-term construction will be decided.
