A resident of a village in eastern Serbia miraculously survived after falling into a well during the Christmas frost and spending two and a half days there at -20 degrees Celsius.

Yazdimir Milic left home on Friday morning to buy food for Christmas, but did not return home.

After 52 hours, fellow villager Goran Markovic found Milic at the bottom of a well about five meters deep. According to him, Milic may not have seen the well due to poor eyesight and fell into it.

Markovich explained that he found the missing person when he saw a bag near the well, which contained a bottle of red wine, several bottles of beer and cornmeal.

“Then I remembered that in the village they were talking about a missing man named Yazdimir. Then I heard screams and looked into the well. At the bottom I saw a seated man with his arms and legs pressed to his chest,”said Markovich.

The firefighters who arrived on call pulled the frozen peasant out of the well. In addition to hypothermia, when falling from a height, Milic received bruises and abrasions.

As a result of severe frosts in Central and Eastern Europe during the New Year holidays, more than 20 people died.
