Heartbreaking archaeological find in Taiwan: mummy and baby
“We could barely hold back sobbing as we dug up these mummies,” recalls Chu Whei-lee, curator of the Anthropology Department at Taiwan's National Museum of Natural Science.
The find was indeed shocking. During excavations, which took place in Taiwan in the Taichung province, archaeologists unearthed the remains of a woman who was clutching a baby to her breast, bowing her head to it. She herself was on her knees. And it seemed that she was still looking at her child.
Scientists believe that the mother and child died 4800 years ago - this is the Stone Age, the Neolithic era. They were covered with earth during a strong earthquake.
The excavation site is Pompeii of the East.
The woman was small in height - about 160 centimeters, the child - a boy - was most likely a newborn. His height was 50 centimeters.
The place where the mummies were found is called "Pompeii of the East". Excavations have been going on here since 2014.
