All over the planet in different parts of it scientists now and then find an unusual and sometimes even mysterious phenomenon - hanging stones. This miracle of nature represents huge multi-ton boulders, which in some absolutely amazing way seem to freeze in one place in an unstable position. Such a place is the western part of the San Bernardino mountains, which are located in America.
These stones even got their special name - unstable hanging blocks. They are formed due to the natural impact on rocks: due to meteorological and geological processes, the material around the stones is washed out, but they remain standing in their place, with their entire mass hanging above the ground. In San Bernardino there are two clusters of such stones, which consist of more than twenty boulders.
It seems that these stones, frozen for centuries in one position, violate all conceivable laws of physics. After all, they somehow miraculously remain standing despite the seismic activity observed nearby. In the area of the Sun Anders Fault, which is not far from the highway leading from Los Angeles to Las Vegas, you can get a good look at this unique natural phenomenon from a fairly close distance.
Relatively recently, scientists have discovered huge stone boulders here, as if researcher Lisa Grant Ludwig reported her find during the annual meeting of the American Seismological Society. And more surprise was caused not so much by the stones themselves, as by the fact that they manage not to fall, even despite the numerous tremors that are constantly noted in this area. That is, in fact, they are in the very epicenter of rather strong earthquakes, but at the same time they remain in the same position.
As Lisa Grant Ludwig noted, the stones are located just seven kilometers from the San Bernardino Fault. During her exploration of the rocks, she was even able to swing some of the rocks with her own hands. But, at the same time, not one of them fell to the ground. Later it turned out that the stones had been here for 18 thousand years.
This only heightens the interest of scientists to unravel the mystery of unstable hanging blocks. After all, for a long time it was believed that their locations just indicate the absence of seismological activity in this area. Now it turns out that not everything is so simple.
