Both in Scandinavian legends and in Russian northern mythology, there is a northern people who left the world underground. For the Scandinavians, these are gnomes, for us Chud is white-eyed. Moreover, from Karelia to the Urals, one can hear stories about the meetings of these mythical creatures with people. And no matter how much modern historians would like to attribute this people to fairy tales and legends, there are references to it in ancient annals.
From these quite documentary sources, we know that in 1030 Yaroslav the Wise went to war against Chud. Having won a crushing victory, he founded the city of Yuryev in that place. In the north of Russia, even today, you can find many geographical names with derivatives from the word chud. But there is no people themselves and no material evidence has survived either.
Scientists claim that in the northern territories of Russia lived a people of short stature, outwardly reminiscent of European dwarfs. Their abrupt disappearance is associated with the appearance of Slavs and Fino-Ugrians in these places. Today, in the Urals, you can meet eyewitnesses who talk about small people with white eyes who save travelers who have lost their way in the forest.
If you collect all the old data in a heap, it becomes clear that these people went underground, filling up all the passages behind them. But it is possible that they still left small exits. Near Perm, hunters still encounter strange wells in which the bottom is not visible.
According to local legends, Chud went underground, hiding from Christianization. In the Urals, there are still man-made hills called the Chud graves. The legends also say that Chud was not gone forever. When the teachers from Belovodye come to earth, then the White-eyed Chud will come out into the world and carry out all of her untold riches.
In 2012, an incident occurred that shocked the scientific community.
The well-known local historian Alexei Mikhailovich Popov received a letter from an ethnographer who worked as a guide during the summer. The photo showed part of the rock, with the barely visible outlines of a huge stone door.
Later it turned out that during the excursion, the passengers of the ship saw a small creature enter the open stone door, which slammed immediately behind him. This sight amazed tourists so much that many even began to shout. This very real case of Chudi's observation suggests that such a phenomenon may be absolutely real.
