The couple refused legal assistance and announced that their lawyer would be a plush lion through which God speaks to them. During the trial, they communicated with the toy with meaningless words and phrases, as in “speaking in tongues” in charismatic churches. The judge decided that it was impossible to return the child to the family.
The couple appealed and accused the court of violating the religious freedoms they have as Christian parents. The judge refused to change the decision, explaining that the verdict was not connected with their faith, but with the threat of domestic violence, unwillingness to follow the recommendations of doctors, doubts about the mother's mental health and the inability of parents to interact with those who are trying to help them, including their own relatives, employees maternity hospital, nurse, doctors, social workers, churches, Christian families, and lawyers.
The girl remained under the tutelage of the state. It can later be passed on for adoption by adoptive parents.
