Surzi is a freshwater lake in the Arkhangelsk region of Russia. The lake is located in the southeast of the Mezensky region, west of the Kosminsky Kamen upland of the Timan ridge. This is one of the largest lakes in the Mezensky region.
In 2001, a company of fishermen came to fish on Lake Surzi to the Pyzhik island. They were not here for the first time. The fishermen put up their nets, made a fire, then swam to the nets.
And suddenly, as one of the fishermen recalls: “Some kind of weakness piled on. I barely had the strength to go back. The fishermen began to shake as if in a fever, and were thrown into a fever. Throwing things, we decided to return home. But one of the fishermen never made it to his native village …
Why one of the fishermen died, the doctors did not determine. Nothing was found in the water, in the vodka, or in the fish. The testimony recorded only that "Death came from poisoning with an unknown poison."
It is likely that no one would have remembered this story if the second fishing trip had not happened a year later. This time, military men, policemen and an FSB colonel came to Surzi. Everything repeated exactly like the first time. Suddenly the people in the boat found it difficult to breathe, they were shaking in a fever, their backs and legs were severely ill, their head was spinning …
One of the unlucky fishermen died at night without regaining consciousness. His body was transported to Arkhangelsk by a special flight of the Ministry of Emergency Situations. Other victims were diagnosed with poisoning with an unknown poison, damage to the liver, kidneys, and muscle tissue. The dog of one of the fishermen also died.
Again, no food poisons were found. Everyone ate the same fish and no one smelled unusual smells or tastes. And not all of the company got sick. And those who have been poisoned are still sick.

Symptoms experienced by fishermen may indicate heavy metal poisoning. But nothing of the kind was found in the lake.
By the way, when for the first time the lake water was brought for examination, the scientists concluded: this is simply the standard of pure water that can be drunk even without boiling.
Another, last, version. At the bottom of Surzi there is something that does not show its deadly properties all the time, but from time to time. It is possible that this object throws highly toxic substances onto the surface.
One summer, the expedition, which included five representatives of various Moscow scientific centers, including the Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, as well as prosecutors, in special protective suits and gas masks, conducted sonar and radiation studies of the bottom.
The next samples of air, water, fish were taken … All analyzes were done in several laboratories, and, according to preliminary data, they turned out to be absolutely normal.
The only thing that can be caught for now is that some parts of the bottom relief could not be thoroughly studied. Is there something lurking there?
Since autumn 2002, the lake has been closed to the public. Nobody protects him, but no one even thinks to fish here. According to experts, today Surzi is one of the most studied reservoirs in Russia, but this does not make the mystery any closer.
