According to scientists, the absence of a struggle for existence and extremely favorable biofactors can lead to the appearance of giant individuals.
"Of course, King Kong is a Hollywood invention," says Susan Lieberman, director of the International Wildlife Research Foundation, "but on remote and practically isolated islands, especially in the southern seas, the evolution of certain species can take on the most bizarre and exaggerated forms."
Monsters of the animal world appear on the islands, such as the wingless bird Dodo (up to three meters high), the giant bat - Livingston's flying fox with a wingspan of about 1.2 m (Comoros) or the dragons of Komodo Island (part of the Lesser Sunda Islands in Indonesia)). The latter are giant lizards up to four meters long, weighing over 250 kilograms. These monsters are capable of instilling no less horror than King Kong: after all, as zoologists say, they attack a person, and then swallow him whole.
And the fact that there are still many "white spots" on Earth is an established fact. Quite recently, a completely "lost world" was found on one of the islands of Indonesia. Scientists have discovered up to 50 species of animals there, completely unknown to science. And, perhaps, it is not in vain that many aborigines talk with superstitious horror about the mysterious monsters that live in the inaccessible corners of the islands.
There are many "white spots" in the depths of the ocean. Recently, having descended in the Mariana Trench to a depth of eleven thousand meters, scientists were surprised to find there a dwelling of huge squids, reaching a length of 30-40 meters. Previously, such gigantic mollusks were known only from marine legends.
