NASA has announced the cost of a permanent lunar base. It turned out that the project would cost the government less than building a single aircraft carrier.
NASA specialist Chris McKay told New Space that it could cost about $ 10 billion to build and host a small permanent base on the moon. According to the scientist, almost any model of a modern aircraft carrier is more expensive for the government.
The expert noted that such an experience will allow in the future to more effectively study Mars by placing several such bases on it. A manned flight to the Red Planet will take place in 2030. If, however, the above-mentioned project is launched in the next few years, it will be tested and finalized just by this time.
To date, NASA cannot deploy a large-scale program, as it is experiencing funding problems, but McKay is confident that it is quite possible to implement this idea. In addition, the specialist suggested using various technologies not related to the space industry when creating such bases. Among them are self-driving cars, toilets, waste recycling and other useful inventions.
