Scientists of that time were more inclined towards the second option. They suggested that in ancient times trees with large roots grew here. Over time, they turned to stone. As a result of this, we got "corkscrews". But why such a phenomenon was observed only in this region (at least there were no reports about this anywhere else).

After all, it is known that millions of years ago (namely, such an age for the spirals) people did not live in America. Or maybe they are not involved in this? But who then? Was the planet in such a distant period inhabited by intelligent beings?
It turns out that everything was much simpler. "Curtains" were made by beavers. At least that's what modern science thinks. Millions of years ago, this continent experienced strong fluctuations in day and night temperatures. Beavers suffered from this and were forced to dig holes in the ground, trying to penetrate as deep as possible.
The finding of a representative of this mammalian species in one of the spirals is used as proof of this theory. But there is one "but" here. He could hit after the object appeared. Strictly speaking, the researchers cannot deny this. Therefore, this is just a theory.
As it really was, we may never know. Attractive versions can be built, but they will lose relevance over time, when new facts become known. So, for example, it was with the roots of trees in this case.
