Who are they? ghostly shadows soundlessly appearing at the walls of a medieval fortress on the shores of the Libyan Sea? Mirage, ghosts of the past, or an unknown natural phenomenon?
Skeptics can grin maliciously and disbelieve. But the fact remains. Every year, in late May - early June, in the south of Crete, near the old castle of Frangokastello and the small village of the same name, ghost shadows appear.
They appear out of nowhere and disappear into nowhere. Many people saw them: ordinary people, military men, politicians, scientists, representatives of the church. There are documents and eyewitness accounts. The only thing that doesn't exist is photographs. Simply because it is impossible to capture this phenomenon on camera. The eyes see, but the technique is powerless.
Locals believe that the mirage is related to the 1827 battle between the Turks and Greeks. Then 335 Greek rebels were killed and their bodies were thrown into the moat. It is believed that it is their restless souls that regularly appear from the shadow of the mountain, march across the plain and disappear into the sea. But the appearance of the ghosts, their weapons, equipment do not look like the Turkish soldiers and Greeks of those times.
The scene stunned by the audience is always different. Sometimes the ghostly warriors walk in long, stretched columns. It happens that horses are present, the sound of hooves and voices is heard. If a person accidentally finds himself in the path of a ghost army or comes too close, he simply stops seeing him.
