In 1871, six years after the end of the American Civil War, Dr. John T. Reed and his son decided to build a hotel. They opened it on New Year's Eve, 1872. The hotel has had the finest reputation over the years. Many famous people have stayed here. In the 1930s, during the trial of Al Capone, the famous gangster lived in this hotel. And he ended up in room 311, glorious for its ghosts. Then iron bars were installed on the windows of the room, removed only during the renovation in 2004. Over the years, guests have spoken of strange phenomena in room 311.
According to legend, this room is inhabited by the ghost of a woman named Annalize Netherli. She and her husband lived in a hotel in the 1920s. There are claims that she was in fact a prostitute. They say that in this hotel she cheated on her husband, who eventually found her with her lover. The hotel staff found Annalize in the bathroom with her throat slit. There is another version of this story, according to which Annalize's husband was a traitor and the girl died of grief in room 311 - her heart could not stand it.
