According to eyewitnesses, mysterious events and unexplained incidents often take place in wars. The First World War was no exception, but let's talk about everything in order.

In August 1915, battles were fought for strategically important positions and heights on the Gallipoli Peninsula between Britain and Turkish formations. British units were ordered to take Hill 60. Lieutenant General Hamilton sent a battalion of the 1/5 Norfolk Regiment to storm the hill, allegedly ordering them to enter from the right flank. The soldiers had to walk several kilometers through the wooded area and reach the enemy positions. Eyewitnesses wrote that as we went deeper into the forest, the soldiers were heard and seen worse and worse, and then they completely disappeared from sight. No shouts of commands, no sounds of shooting. Nobody saw them again. No corpses or equipment were found at the scene.

Investigation

Naturally, the British command decided that the soldiers were taken prisoner and, after the surrender of Turkey, demanded that they be returned. But the Turkish authorities said that nothing like this happened. At the place where the soldiers disappeared, no military operations were conducted at all and no one took prisoners there. It was decided to conduct an independent investigation, which was crowned with success, and also added mysteries. On the battlefield, some elements of soldiers' uniforms were found. Nearby in the village there was a resident who told about the found corpses of English soldiers whom he buried in the gorge. It would seem that this is the explanation for those strange events, but not everything is so simple. According to a local resident, the bodies of the soldiers were scattered over a large area, namely two and a half square kilometers, including an area almost a kilometer behind the enemy's line of defensewhich is already very strange. After removing the bodies of the soldiers from the gorge, attention was drawn to the strange injuries of the bodies, as if they were thrown from a height. In addition, the bodies were less than two hundred, while the missing battalion numbered 267 people. The mysticism is also added by the fact that of all the bodies found, only two could be identified.

New facts

For about fifty years of this story, there was no normal explanation, only theories and assumptions. And after 1967, this event took on a fantastic connotation. The fact is that in the declassified documents, references were found to a strange fog at the battle site, which made it difficult to navigate and direct artillery. Other eyewitnesses spoke of several strange clouds that hovered over the battlefield, and one hung directly in the path of the soldiers. They went into this fog, after which they ceased to be heard. The cloud dissolved, but the soldiers were gone. According to another version, the cloud rose into the sky, merged with other similar clouds, moved somewhere to the side and after a while completely disappeared from view.

There are many versions of this event, but none of them have been confirmed. Something strange happened there, and it looks like we will never know for sure the truth.
