She had CT and MRI scans, but when she was discharged three weeks later, she lost her voice altogether. Doctors performed many tests and ruled out stroke, but could not determine the cause of the loss of the ability to speak.
She later went on vacation to Thailand with her partner. After just five days of traveling, Egan began to speak again. Her speech soon recovered, but took on an Eastern European accent. Sometimes her accent switched to French and Italian, and when she was stressed, her accent became Russian. When Egan got too tired, she couldn't speak again. Then the Englishwoman was finally diagnosed with foreign accent syndrome. This is a rare speech disorder that results from brain damage.
“This whole experience was exhausting and absolutely overwhelming. It's not just my accent that has changed. I do not speak or think the way I used to. I cannot build a sentence the way I would have done it before the illness. Now I write differently and my whole vocabulary has changed. My English has gotten worse, even though I've lived in the UK all my life,”said Egan. Because of her foreign accent, strangers began to treat her less well. “The man in the supermarket yelled at me. He said that because of foreigners like me, we have a coronavirus,”she complained. Earlier it was reported that a resident of Liverpool began to speak English with a Russian accent after a stroke. Doctors attributed this to foreign accent syndrome, a rare and incurable complication after a stroke or traumatic brain injury.
