In the 1850s, Nekrasov and Panaeva wrote a novel "Dead Lake", which told about a certain lake located in the middle of the forest and which is a haven for many evil spirits.

It is believed that the source of inspiration for the writers was Lake Kuolemayarvi, located near Vyborg, or Lake Kuolajärvi in Karelia. This name translates as "dead lake" or "lake of death".

Lake Kuolemajärvi is very deep and the locals prefer not to swim in it. Too many people have drowned here.

Many birds and animals live near the lake. But the birds sometimes unexpectedly find themselves without feathers, and the frogs grow to incredible sizes. We saw here strange huge mosquitoes with two proboscis and two pairs of wings. Their bite can cause swelling in a person and a strong allergic reaction.

After several children prone to allergies died, the kids were no longer allowed to go to the lake.

There are also a lot of rumors about what is found in it. They say that during the famine times of the Great Patriotic War, two boys decided to fish. One of them had an old boat left over from his father who had fought at the front, on which they sailed across the lake. Soon one of the teenagers felt that something, very large and strong, had pecked at his bait. When he pulled harder, a huge head appeared on the surface. She had large, cloudy eyes, dark brown skin, and a large mouth that had caught a fishhook. Unable to resist the boat, the boy found himself in the water, where a whirlpool immediately appeared, dragging him to the depth.

His comrade, beside himself with horror, buried himself in the direction of the shore, hearing words behind him in an unknown language. Since then, no one has dared to fish in this lake.

But soon after the war, one man claimed that he saw a mermaid near him, that her whole body was in brown scales, and the description was similar to the creature that dragged the young fisherman under the water. The mermaid, who met the man, basked in the sun, and when he approached, she immediately disappeared into the water, flashing a fish tail.

In the 1960s, a local woman in the forest met a strange man with a bald head, protruding eyes, a narrow mouth and brown skin. The creature had no hands and had hair on its body. The creature explained to the woman that it was an ordinary man who had his hands torn off during the war and severely burned his face. In this form, he allegedly did not want to return home and began to live in the forest. He begged the woman to bring him food, but when she returned with the men, no one was found in the same place.

There were a lot of similar cases. In the 1970s, local residents had the idea that these creatures were just transformed people who disappeared near the lake. There was an assumption about the effects of radiation. But it remained unclear how people could survive under water and where a strong source of radiation could come from.

One of the ufologists suggested that somewhere near the lake, an alien spacecraft could land. Studies have been carried out that have found strange metal structures at the bottom of the lake. No mermaids or people living underwater were found. The ufologist left, intending to return and continue his research, but soon died of a heart attack. No one else ventured to explore the lake.
