The WS-606A program is a once secret work to create a disc-shaped aircraft.

Since 1947, the Canadian company "Canadien Avro", under the leadership of the English designer John Frost, began work on the creation of air cushion vehicles. And already in 1955, the same group was working on the creation of a highly maneuverable interceptor, capable of speeds up to 2300 km / h (according to other sources - 419 km / h, which is closer to the truth).

Customers from the Pentagon (more precisely, representatives of the Air Force and the US Army) announced that "the interceptor will revolutionize military affairs" and that during the flight "it will be possible to mistake it for a UFO."

The order (program WS-606A) arose almost immediately after the famous Roswell incident. Then the Pentagon allegedly fell into the hands of a broken flying saucer and alien bodies, found on July 7, 1947, seventy-five miles northwest of the Roswell military base (later renamed Walker Feld).

It is a strange coincidence, which few have paid attention to, although the desire of the military to get their hands on a similar "trick" is quite understandable.

Initially, the WS-606A project was supposed to resemble a disc-shaped rocket. But for the public, the device was officially presented with a completely different appearance and a different name "Avrocar"

The story with the flying saucer Avro (VZ-9V Avrocar) has been so licked by the Pentagon's official information service that a doubt involuntarily creeps in: has everything been said about this project? The option is not excluded that in fact "Avro" is just a screen covering much more serious work. And that there were 2 completely different Avro projects.

If you believe the Mexican newspapers, the Americans wanted to get from the "Canadien Avro" a disk-shaped rocket that "develops near-light speeds" (?!), but in fact, an apparatus with a diameter of 5.49 m (or 5.48?), A diameter of a central rotor 1.52 m and a total mass of 2563 kg was powered by 3 jet engines "Kontinental J69-T-9" (not only capable of "near-light", but also of transonic speeds).

It was conceived so that after a vertical take-off on operating turbines, the thrust vector deviated, providing horizontal thrust.

Although the outwardly built disk-shaped aircraft VZ-9V "Avrokar" was very beautiful, but the flight performance was much worse (it was not possible to ensure stability in flight).

On December 12, 1959, the aircraft made its first approach at the Avro Canada plant in Melton. A year and a half later, on May 17, 1961, horizontal flights began. And already in December 1961, the work was stopped "due to the expiration of the contract."

However, not everything is so simple. According to other sources, already on June 24, 1960, the manufacturers had to officially admit the failure, but this - pay attention - A YEAR BEFORE THE BEGINNING of horizontal flights!

One way or another, but on this the contract with the Canadians burst, and again there were memories of the entire program of creating a flying saucer. But not only: photographs, film records have been preserved, one of the devices was given to the Museum of Transportation of the American Army in Virginia. The second copy of the VZ-9V was simply broken. On this, all work in this area was officially terminated.
